TitleStephen Markham, Devoted Servant
AuthorFrampton, Amber
AbstractThis paper explores part of the life of key witness to the early history of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, Stephen Markham. Stephen Markham was a man of courage, dedication, honesty and endurance. He joined a religion during one of the most difficult periods in its history. He was instrumental in the building of new cities, dedicated much of his time to church callings and risked his personal safety to be a bodyguard to Joseph Smith Jr., a person he believed to be a Prophet of God. Because of the scarcity of personal records, much of what Stephen did has been lost to history. This paper pieces together some of the information available on this character to reveal how he was an instrumental figure in the history of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, particularly at the Martyrdom of Joseph and Hyrum Smith.
