| Description | Every major belief system contains within its traditions two smaller groups, Hermetic and Gnostic, that use numbers as a vital part of their devotional observations. The Hermetic systems (in Taoism, Islam, Judaism, or Christianity) follow the belief that the individual can grow closer to the Divine Will through rigorous living and physical experimentation using scientific and mathematical principles. The Gnostic systems parallel this belief through applying similar scientific and mathematical principles in their experiments on the mental and spiritual planes. In all these traditions, the Golden Rectangle and the ratio phi is shared, as are an understanding of the constructive properties of the square and the circle, and a sacred view of the properties of numbers. This box is a comparison of the shared use of math and number in religious observance, focusing on the number seven, the circle and square, and the cube. Symbols in the box link integers and shapes with power points, planets, and elements—associations which are markedly parallel among Hermetic and Gnostic traditions from ancient America and Babylon into the modern world. |
