| Title | Blow…Make a Wish, by Tammy Ballard |
| Artist | Ballard, Tammy |
| Description | When I was a little girl, I believed that if I blew the seeds of a dandelion into the air and made a wish that somehow magically those seeds and my dreams could come true. Of course with maturity I understood the game yet held onto the optimism. I just understood that to make my dreams come true that would also involve a lot of work on my part. As much as I enjoyed my math courses many concepts took a lot of practice. However, I always appreciated geometry's explanation for defining space. The rules for diameter, areas, circumference and others help me transform my two dimensional designs into the realms of 3D. I wouldn't have been able to find the angles of the copper rods without knowing the relation of X, Y, and Z to the plane of the wood block sides. I've heard some artists say that they became artists because they weren't very good at math. In my case, without math, I don't think my sculptures would be nearly as successful at conveying my allegorical messages. |
| Medium | Metal and Wood, 17" x 15" x 15" |
| About the Artist | As a self proclaimed "pack rat", I enjoy rummaging through surplus, thrift, and antique stores or auctions looking for inspiration for my sculptures. People often comment that they wouldn't have thought someone that looks like me, a wife and mother of three young adult children, would be the same person who loves working with discarded machine shop scrap metal, drills, grinders, and lathes. Through symbolism, my sculptures reflect my personal contemporary views towards social issues and politics, versus patriotism and religion. |
