DescriptionBoil is a digital image from a computer simulation of fluid flow. The surface in Boil is composed of a set of connected triangles, each of which is defined by the computer as a list of three nodes, and the position of each of those nodes is stored as a set of three numbers. The surface began as a flat plane and was slowly evolved into this shape after hundreds of iterations of an algorithm. The algorithm is the computer's approximation of the Euler equation---one of the essential equations of fluid dynamics. Specifically, the surface evolves as if it represents the boundary between two fluids of different densities acted upon by a uniform gravity field. The far fluid is rendered as if it were made of glass and sitting upon a light box. An advantage of using computer programs to simulate physical phenomena is that the code that must be written for the task can be modified to selectively and creatively break the laws of physics or operate on conditions that could never exist in nature. This effectively allows an artist-scientist to explore an infinite number of universes, each full of its own self-organizing and evolving shapes and patterns. A fast computer and these specialized programs are the tools that I use to create my art. As in most of my other work, in Boil I aim to illustrate the simplicity and beauty inherent in the common yet mostly invisible phenomena of fluid dynamics.

About the ArtistMark J. Stock is an artist, programmer, and scientist whose work depicts scenes from the hidden world of computational physics—the science of digitally simulating complex natural phenomena on supercomputers—and is created with custom software developed over the course of his scientific research. Mark currently works for a small fluid dynamics research company and develops art in his studio.
