| Description | Green Streamlines is a digital image of particle streamlines in fluid turbulence and was generated from a computer simulation. In order to simulate a physical system such as this on a computer, the equations of motion must be converted from vector and tensor calculus into something much simpler. What is expressed on paper as a single, complicated-sounding equation becomes an algorithm consisting of billions of additions, multiplications, and comparisons performed in a very specific sequence on a large set of numbers. This translation from mathematics to computer algorithm is the topic of the field of numerical methods. The geometry in Green Streamlines is composed of a set of connected segments, each of which is defined by the computer as a list of two nodes, and the position of each of those nodes is stored as a set of three numbers. Those segmented paths are created by repetitively adding the influences of thousands of vortex particles at each step along the way. The formula for the influence of a single vortex particle is relatively simple, and is a solution of the potential flow equation. The vortexes were placed randomly and are invisible, leaving only the stream traces to represent the flow. |

| About the Artist | Mark J. Stock is an artist, programmer, and scientist whose work depicts scenes from the hidden world of computational physics—the science of digitally simulating complex natural phenomena on supercomputers—and is created with custom software developed over the course of his scientific research. Mark currently works for a small fluid dynamics research company and develops art in his studio. |
