Biographical Note/Historical Note +/-

In 2004 UVSC Student Council VP Joe Vogel invited Michael Moore, Oscar and Emmy-winning director films Roger & Me, Bowling for Columbine, and Fahrenheit 9/11, and author of Dude Where's My Country? and Stupid White Men, to address the college community on behalf of the student body. As a counterbalance to Moore's visit, the Student Council also invited conservative talk radio personality and Fox News host Sean Hannity to speak.

Moore's work is politically liberal and critical of the Republican Party and other conservative ideals. This invitation caused great controversy in the largely conservative Orem community, as well as the student body. The actions of the UVSC Student Council eventually generated a petition and lawsuit against them and faculty representative Phil Clegg by Kay Anderson. The controversy also inspired Steven Greenstreet to film a documentary entitled "This Divided State." Many within the state were opinionated as to both Michael Moore and Sean Hannity and weighed in heavily via opinion pieces and letters to the editor of a variety of local and collegiate newspapers.
