Issue 2 The Library Connection
By Mike Freeman, Library Director
One of the odd catch-22 situations of the R401 process is that standard question:
Does the Library have sufficient resources to support the program? Since we have
never had the program or degree, we have little reason to collect extensively in
that area. Yet, somehow, the Library should now be able to support it.
Two responses come to mind. First, new programs rarely exist in a vacuum, and
usually the Library has applicable material. Second, we are generally aware of new
degrees being proposed. Usually, the Library’s collections have been adequate to
garner Regents’ support for the degree. Graduate programs could pose particular
challenges in the future.
The Library can provide better service with advance notice, so that we can lay the
groundwork for new degrees and progams. Advance preparation would make
your R401 proposal more successful. Librarians are happy to supply library hold-ings
information for your R401 requests. Journal holdings can be strengthened
and additional one-time money can build book collections as necessary.

LibraryCraft is Coming Soon
By Annie Smith, Reference/Instruction Librarian
Every fall, the Library hosts a library orientation game called Get a Clue to introduce students to our
building and collections. But did you know we also offer an orientation game to help students learn
about our online services during the spring semester? In addition to showing students around the Li-brary’s
site, LibraryCraft helps them develop skills such as locating print and
online books and finding specific articles. Tasks also introduce students to ser-vices
such as LiveHelp and Interlibrary Loan.
LibraryCraft will be available from January 6 to January 25. The game includes
a printable certificate for successful players that can be used as proof of com-pletion.
Preparing Students for Library Instruction
By Ben Wilson, Reference/Instruction Librarian
We are often asked how you can best prepare students for library instruction. We know students are more atten-tive
when they have an assignment to work on in class and a clear topic in mind. This changes library instruc-tion
into an opportunity to get ahead on research. For some classes, librarians may use a student’s topic as a
sample search during the instruction session.
Fifty minutes is not enough to learn all the research tips and tricks librarians know. To make the most of your
class time in the Library, you may want to discuss topic selection beforehand. The Library’s tutorials (www.uvu.
edu/library/tutorials) are also good tools to suggest to any struggling students or as a way to review.
Thank you for bringing your students to the Library. We love seeing the change as students realize that research
isn’t scary once they know what to do.

Beyond the Research Paper
By Annie Smith, Reference/Instruction Librarian
In the September 2013 issue of The Library Connection, we shared some ways you could make use of the George
Sutherland Archives in creating assignments. This time, we’d like to suggest how you can incorporate the rest
of the Library’s collections into assignments beyond the dreaded research paper.
• Fact-check a Wikipedia article. Not only does this assignment require research, it also teaches important
lessons about the quality of information found online.
• Create a grant proposal for a project in your discpline. A good proposal will include a literature review,
justification, budget, impact, etc.
• Create a research guide on a topic for
other students that includes books,
articles, and quality websites.
• Nominate someone or a group for a
Nobel Prize (choose the prize most
appropriate for your class) and jus-tify
the nomination.
• Create a problem scenario for your
class; this could be a disease to diag-nose
for a health class, an engineer-ing
problem, or a case study. Students
would need to justify their solutions
with actual data and research.

The Library currently subscribes to three video streaming ser-vices:
Films on Demand, American History in Video, and Dance in
Video. All three services provide permanent links that will lead
students directly to the video from Canvas. You can find these
video services on our list of databases (www.uvu.edu/library/lib-search/
alldatabases.html).
Films on Demand places a permanent link below the video and
video description (shown at right), in the section labeled Title
URL. You can also use the embed code underneath the video’s
play controls. If you click on the embed option, a space will open
on the screen with embed code for the video. Paste these codes
into HTML documents to embed the video on a webpage.
American History in Video and Dance in Video provide an “em-bed/
link” option above the video (shown below). Clicking that
option will open another window with the permanent link and
the embed code.
Adding video to your courses can bring the material to life for
students in a way that text can’t. If you have any questions about our streaming video services, please contact
Jacques d’Emal at x8058 or jacques.demal@uvu.edu.

Working Together to Create a Better Library
By Lesli Baker, Assistant Director—Public Services
Did you know that each department on campus has an assigned library liaison? Library liaisons offer a
means for the Library to address campus needs. Liaisons are most beneficial in the following ways:
• Purchasing materials. Librarians rely on faculty requests to build collections that support the cur-riculum.
Faculty liaisons provide insights into what is taught and offer suggestions on areas of the
collection to build.
• Preparation for new degrees or programs. By working together with a library liaison, the Library can
purchase materials to support curriculum changes. This is especially helpful for new courses that
may need additional materials.
• R401 assistance. Subject librarians can provide reports on materials to support new degrees. We are
always happy to help with the R401 process.
• Communication. Faculty may not know what new resources are available and how those resources
can help with research. Librarians may not know about curriculum changes or faculty research proj-ects.
A library liaison provides an avenue of communication that runs both ways.
• Feedback. Faculty offer great suggestions on how
the Library can better serve the campus. We value
this feedback.
• Special accreditation. Many department have or
are seeking accreditation from professional orga-nizations.
These accreditations may have library
requirements. Library liaisons and librarians can
work together to meet those requirements.
We hope you will continue to work with your library li-aisons.
Please contact me at x8286 or bakerle@uvu.edu
if you do not know who your current library liaison is.
