The College Times MONDAY, JANUARY 7, 2008 THE INDEPENDENT STUDENT VOICE OF UTAH VALLEY STATE VOLUMEXXXVII.NO. 15 UVCOLLEGETIMES.COM Student resources Health Services offer students a healthy dose of wellness Justin Ritter News writer Students wanting to improve their health, change their lifestyle or just stay healthy need not look farther than campus for a professional resource and health services. The Student Health Services' s wellness programs provide a variety of ways for students to change behavior, stop us ing alcohol and tobacco, prevent diabetes and stay healthy. According to a statement on its website, the wellness programs offer, "services to students and employees that will enhance personal wellness and the ability to be successful in the five areas of health, which are physical, academic, emotional, social and spiritual." See HEALTH . A2 Academics New bachelors degrees available and more on the way. Christine Shell Expect the number of bachelor's degrees at UVSC to continue to increase with this year's transition to university status. At the start of the fall 2007 semester, UVSC broadened its degree offerings, which now totals 56 bachelor's programs. Students may now pursue Bachelor of Arts degrees in Deaf Studies, as well as in American Sign Language and Deaf Education, and Bachelor of Sciences degrees in Software Engineering, Economics and Biotechnology. Among all other Utah public colleges and universities, the new degree offered in Biotechnology is unique to UVSC. According to its Web site, UVSC See BACHELORS . A2 1 1 r Financial aid Discover the financial aid options available at UVSC - Robert Hayden News designer Earning a college degree requires the devotion of time and effort. It also requires something less readily available to college students: money, a lot of money. The cost of higher education has soared; according to USA Today , tuition, fees, room and board at public four-year colleges nationwide have surged 38 percent in the past decade alone. A solution exists: Financial Aid, in the form of grants, loans, work and scholarships. "Financial Aid provides a financial opportunity to students who wouldn't otherwise have the financial means to attend a higher education institute," said Welcome back students old and new! The College Times would like to share theins-and-outs of UVSC life. Hall of Flags, the ultimate runway of UVSC's elit(e)ists. 56 degrees and rising! That's what the billboard told me! No good coffee cart. All the buildings are connected, that's pretty cool. Seriously. No parking. Whatsoever. For legitimate things that UVSC has to offer, refer to the articles about student resources, academics, and financial aid. f ) Robberies lead to arrest of UVSC student Jennie Nicholls Assistant News editor Former UVSC student, Ammon Hardin, 18, was arrested by the Provo Police Department on Dec. 10 after evidence linked him to three armed robberies and two break-ins. On Nov. 27, a Provo Mav-erik convenience store was the target of Hardin's first reported offense. Hardin reportedly held the clerk at gunpoint with a semi-automatic pistol and told the clerk to put money into a cardboard box. He then fled the scene on foot. Hardin then held up Crest, another convenience store in Provo. The clerk at that store questioned Hardin about the authenticity of the gun he was carrying and asked him to shoot the gun to prove it was real. Hardin did not shoot and left the scene without getting any money from the clerk. That same day Hardin also robbed a Subway restaurant. Eyewitness descriptions of the suspect and vehicle on the scene of the burglary at an Allen's Super Save Mart led to Hardin's arrest. The store was missing more than $1,000 worth of prescription medication from its pharmacy. The vehicle eyewitnesses described aided police in the arrest as officers stopped a car that matched the getaway vehicle's description. Footprints left behind in the snow at the scene of the crime matched those on the tread of the shoes Hardin was wearing. The design on the shoe was intricate enough for police to believe it was a definite match to the prints.
