Marlon Snow, a member of UVSC's Board of Trustees does not want UVSC to make the impression that they are trying to rid themselves of the original mission statement of providing vocational classes at another school so that UVSC can offer a stronger liberal arts education. The technology center's governing " board voted against the measure twice.-The Utah State Board of Regents tagged it as a priority bill which will turn the technology center into Snow College South. A group of citizens in the Sevier Valley area are working hard for easier access to higher education and technical education programs. Wal-Mart's representative said this is very important because it, "prevented two-way traffic on the parking lot road and made it so only one car could get by." There may be some debate regarding UVSC's role in the entire parking affair. Some students think that UVSC's Parking Operation WANTON TONGANS Tonga has a shortage of educational supplies and UVSC students are stepping up to provide basic necessities. Bv J o d i Dreher S t a k f Reporter A large-scale service project at UVSC called Operation GIVE (Giving International Values Educationally) has raised almost $200,000 worth of books and supplies to benefit Tongan students who have a shortage of basic educational supplies. The project's goal is to raise over $500,000 in books and supplies as well as $15,000 in cash donations. Dave Nabrotzky, chairman of the project, said that "sometimes there is only one book for 30 kids in Tonga." The schools are located in Eua, Tonga, which is near the coast of Australia. There are two LDS high schools as well as some other high schools in Tonga that will benefit from INSIDE ( Big Finish The men's and women's basketball teams finished the season with strong victories each. Parking Services does offer free parking on campus grounds, so students who cannot afford or do not want to buy a parking sticker can still park for free. The free parking lot is on the north end of the school in the dirt area of the northern parking lot. Although it may seem light years SWAC tournament set to begin in Rexburg, Idaho The SWAC tourney begins today in Rexburg, Idaho. The women, pictured left, are the second seed heading in the tournament and stand a good chance of making some noise. Turn to page B4 for an extensive rundown of 1998 SWAC tourney. SPECIAL K: The women's basketball team gathers in a huddle and forms the letter 'K' with their hands stretched high in the air. The 'K' symbolizes their drive to make it to Hutchinson, Kan., site of the 1998 NJCAA women's tournament. Mike Lloydmie College Times GIVE continues efforts the supplies. Nabrotzky also described two meanings to contribute to OperationGIVE: a superficial meaning and a deeper meaning. The superficial meaning is that "books collect dust, and students don't need them," he said. The deeper meaning, he added, is that we have the opportunity to "serve and help give someone else an education."Operation GIVE originated here at UVSC but has exploded into the community. Several local high schools have entered into competition to see who can donate the most. The winning high school is awarded a free dance sponsored by ASUVSC and Redd Alert Entertainment. Local Boy Scouts are also helping by focusing their Eagle Projects on the program.One Boy Scout completed a project of building boxes for the items to be shipped in. In addition, UVSC offers a shuttle bus system that will cart students to the free lot. A sticker is required to park in the free parking lot, but it is easily obtained by presenting current emissions and registration papers to the UVSC Parking Office. The UVSC Parking Office also offers temporary parking passes for only two dollars. These passes are good for five consecutive school days and can be used in any parking lot on campus. Student Alumni club sends students to convention ALUM IN THE FAMILY UVSC's Student Alumni-Ambassadors represented the College at a convention in California. . By Sean Moran Staff Reporter UVSC's Student Alumni-Ambassadors traveled to the University of California at Davis to attend a four-day SAA District Conference, Feb. 5-8. The annual conference was attended by 30 schools from the Western United States. The ten club members that went represented the college as ambassadors. The University of California at Davis hosted the four days of events. They provided the students with casual activities like dancing, a river-boat murder mystery SEE ALUMNI, CONTINUED ON PG.
