Candidates, Jon Huntsman Jr., Nolan Karras, Jim Hanson, Dr. Gary Benson, Marty Stevens, Fred Lampropo-luos, Gary Herbert and Parley Hellewell gathered together to answer questions chosen by the UVSC community. Phillip Gordon, chair of the UVSC Communications department said, "I'm just very proud of UVSC, I think this is an example of how we can be a forum for the exchange of public information. I think we can say for sure that whoever is going to be in the governor's mansion next year is going to know who UVSC is, and they are going to know the issues that we face." Absent from the debate was current governor Olene Walker, who had a scheduling conflict and was in Canada on a trade mission for the state. While the other candidates did not openly attack the incumbent, there were few, if any, compliments paid to the first female governor in state history, nor to her predecessor Michael Leavitt. The atmosphere of Wednesday night's debate was certainly one of transition in the state's Republican Party, as all agreed the state's top spot needed change. Topics such as UVSC's funding, tax reform, and parental rights were discussed. The moderator for the debate was Bruce Lindsay, news anchor for KSL in Salt Lake, asked each of the candidates five questions, which they were given a minute and fifteen seconds to answer. After each candidate had the opportunity to answer the question the floor was opened up to a round table discussion of the topic. "One of the challenges you have in a debate," said Lindsay, "in particular in an in-party debate, is to differentiate candidates. And when you have a field of nine candidates, eight of whom were here tonight, there is not a lot of time. My hat is off to the people who structured the debate at the college. I thought UVSC handled the debate very well and they should be commended." The first issue that was discussed was the Utah Board of Regents. "I remember seeing the children come into the clinic the first morning we cot there, we hadn't had any sleep that night before; the people just looked at us like heroes," said Sumsion.
