With Romesburg on this trip were Ma-lan Jackson, Director of International Studies at UVSC, Brad Cook, Assistant to the President for Special Projects, and Alan Ash- ton, Board of Trustees Chairman. Two years ago Romesburg was among 17 community college presidents invited by the Chinese government to visit various institutions of higher education throughout China. As a result, invitations were extended by several Chinese educational leaders to develop a variety of cooperative agreements. The most viable and promising project proved to be a request from the Vice Governor of the Shaanxi Province, Jiang Xin Zhen, to assist in the development of the first community college in China. UVSC passes accreditation Sheila Banister News Editor Utah Valley State College passed its accreditation with honors to look forward to. "Accreditation is a status granted an educational institution meet or exceed stated criteria of educational quality by the commission on Colleges," said Joseph Malik, executive director of the Northwest Association of Schools and Colleges. "We received a favorable report and review on our two-year program," said UVSC President Kerry Romesburg. "I really couldn't be more pleased." The Northwest Association of Schools and Colleges gave the college a full-scale accreditation as a two year institution with 13 commendations and 10 recommendations. They also moved up the date for an accreditation review as a four-year institution two years. The evaluation will be held in the fall of 1995 instead of in 1997. Lucille Stoddard, UVSC's vice president of academic affairs and a past member of the association's Commission on Colleges, said for a school to receive more commendations than recommendations is "highly unlikely" and she had never seen a report like it until now. Malik said, "Accreditation has two fundamental purposes: to certify to the quality of the institution and to assist the institution in the improvement of its programs and services." The accreditation included an in-depth look at the school's See ACCREDITATION, Page 5 and gained some goals that has been found to In May 1994, Romesburg's delegation from UVSC, as well as delegations from Los Medanos College and Florida Community College in Jacksonville, returned to China to help further their community college plans. Todd Neilson, the supervisor of telephone services at UVSC, mentioned the phone system currently being used is over 17-years-old and they are usually replaced or upgraded every five to seven years. "The old system was purchased used, and that was back in the mid-eighties. It really should have been replaced twice since then," said Neilson. The phone system at UVSC doesn't have many options for faculty or students. Many complaints have been made to Neilson regarding the constant busy signal during registration and the voicemail for faculty always having problems. Neilson explained there are only five lines available for the operators to put calls through and "the voice mail system just doesn't have many options." The phone system currently used at UVSC is an analog system, which is similar to those used in homes. "The problem with these phones is they have a limited number of functions and this system is so old that there is no possibility of growth within it," said Neilson. One of UVSC's operators, Ann Richan, mentioned the new digital system will allow them to have 12 lines instead of the five they have been struggling with. Richan said, "The current phones are fine, but we expect the new phones system See PHONE SYSTEM, Page 4 Worms As Heroes? The Red Worm, Eisenia Foetida, has become a conservation hero.
