Bmmw fl o "OFFinATTNEWSPAPER OF UTAH TECHNICAL COLLEGE AT FROVOOREM November 21, 1979 NEWSLINE by Alan Jones WOMEN AND BLACK TO BE FREED Ayatollah Ruhollah Khomeini Saturday ordered Iranian militants occupying the U.S. Embassy in Tehran to free all women and black hostages, Radio Tehran reported. It said he acted out of Islamic mercy, but ordered the others held until the shah is returned to Iran. The Tehran broadcast, monitored in London and Kuwait, said the students agreed to release the group, about a dozen women and blacks. Khomeini said, "The noble Iranian nation will not give permission for the release of the other hostages until the American government acts according to the wish of the nation. In Washington, the White House said it knew in advance of the plan to free women and blacks, welcomed it and was doing all it could to secure the release of all the Americans and non-Americans held in the embassy since Nov. 4. CARTER ASKS STATES TO RATION GASOLINE Washington The Carter administration says states should consider an immediate return to odd-even gasoline purchase rules and rigid enforcement of the 55-mph speed limit to curb the nation's thirst for foreign oil. Administration officials also say they are pushing for as much as a ninefold increase in the use of "oasnhnl" hv the end of next vear and will try to double the pace of converting oil-and gas-burning utilities to coal. Carter said "there is no reason to panic" over the cutoff of Iranian oil. He noted the reserve supplies of fuel are better now than they were a year ago. Energy Secretary Charles Duncan said the effect of the oil cutoff will take 45 to 50 days to show up. He also said oil companies may be able to ease the shortage by buying oil elsewhere. PRES. KIMBALL UNDERGOES SURGERY President Spencer W. Kimball of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints was listed in guarded condition Saturday following the removal of a recurrent blood and fluid accumulation on his brain. The 84-year-old church leader was admitted to the hospital Friday night after complaining of numbness in his left arm. Tests showed a subdural hematoma - an accumulation of blood and fluid between the skull and the brain. Dr. Bruce F. Sorenson, the neurosurgeon who performed the operation Saturday as well as a similar one last September, said President Kimball was 'resting comfortably" in the Hospital's intensive care unit following the hour-long operation. The cause of the recurrent hematoma is not tnnwn at this time Often a bumD or a fall will result in a hematoma, but the church president has experienced none of these in recent weeks. ARIZONA PLANE CRASH Grand Canyon Ariz. Only five of the 44 persons aboard a tour plane that crashed and burned in a clearing near the Grand Canyon were injured. Judy was" responsible for getting the 41 French tourists safely and quickly off the Nevada Airlines plane that crashed and burned at 2:53 p.m. Friday the 16th. "It was a miracle that people came out of this alive," said County Sheriff Joe Richards, who said Miss Morse got the passengers out through a rear door. The twin-engine, prop driven Martin 404 apparently lost power in one engine just after takeoff for a return trip to Las Vegas. The pilot, Capt. William R. Blewett, tried to return to Grand Canyon Airport, but the plane hit a pine tree and went down l'2 miles from the runway in a clearing surrounded by pine trees and brush. ,'..; ' v ' '" ' ' ' Nearly 250 people attended "Wishing on a Star," Saturday night's Preference Dinner-Dance.
