As v Staff Report o7??e Coge f'mes ISomewhere along the line, every student at UVSC has had The Moment. Each of us is familiar with that sudden, often piercing moment of white-hot clarity when getting a college education was one of the most important pursuits in our lives. Suddenly, spending our afternoons armed with a spatula in one hand and a bag of McDonald's fries in the other lost its luster. We all believed there was something more, something bet- ter than $4.75 an hour. And here we are. In college. Getting an education. There are a few, granted, who will end up at the comer fast food dive whether they attend college or not. And there are a few that will find their fortune with a high school diploma. For the rest of us, we're head ed in the right direction, the gunsight of our lives placed squarely and firmly on obtaining a college diploma. Utah Valley State College, once a humble techincal trade school, has blossomed, really, into a thriving, exciting environment for a staggering number of students from all over the United States and even the world. A stroll through the Hall of Flags (most colleges and universities have a clock tower or a monument as it's identifying mark; we have the Hall of Flags) reiterates just how varied and diverse this college really is. Originally, UVSC was founded in Provo as a result of the influx of returning World War II veterans into Utah County. In 1945, Central Utah Vocational School was bom so the local G.I. Joe contingent would have an educational option other than Brigham Young University. In the following decades, the school relocated to swampy Orem fields and underwent a number of name changes until it settled, finally, with its current moniker. Some of the flaws were Utah Technical College and Utah Valley Cofffriunity College. Originally, theytffeol had aBterollment of undred.
