FINANCIAL AID: The new "Free Application for Federal Student Aid, 1996-97 (FAFSA)" packets Guatemalan city adopted by UVSC Karina Draney News Editor Anticipating his future, Edwin Agustin awoke at 3 a.m. on the dirt floor of his home in a village called Tojcheche, which is nestled in the mountains of Western Guatemala. He proceeded to walk 30 kilometers to an interview, with the dream of receiving what most American college stu dents take for granted. Agustin's desires to be one of 50,000 people in Tojcheche (a town in Comitancillo), and other surrounding villages, to go to college did not go unfulfilled. The scholarship that was given to Agustin during the previously mentioned interview helped him to receive a degree in Environmental Management at UVSC. After attaining knowledge of how life could be, Agustin was reminded of the way the people of Comitancillo and the 45 villages in the region lived. Agustin want- ft ed to change things in Guatemala, but he couldn't do it alone. He asked those who would listen for help, so that he could help his people to help themselves. The plea was simple, unfortunately the action was overwhelming. Malan Jackson, Ph.D. and Director of the Center for International Studies at UVSC, rose to the occasion. The theme for the banquet was a luau, and the audience was graced with performances from the ballroom dance team, the Polynesian club and Synergy. The close of the 1996 summer term will mark the end of this program. Dr. Ian K. Wilson, dean of the school of business, said, "We thought we would have an opportunity to play an important role in the development of the educational system in the Ukraine." The program was implemented shortly after the collapse of the Soviet Union. Students in the Ukraine were in great need of education to help them deal with the problems of a changing government. UVSC partnered with institutions of higher education in Kiev, and offered students an Associate of Applied Science in Business Management. The degree was accredited by the Northwest Association of Schools and Colleges (NASC). Wilson gave several reasons for the closure of the program. The location of the program brought questions of security. American faculty exchange was a safety concern as the fall of the Soviet Union brought concerns about an unstable economy. UVSC also had to handle concerns about the curriculum and operation of the programs. NASC demands certain restrictions in order to guarantee the quality of education being offered. If these requirements are not met the NASC will not accredit the program. If the program is not accredited the students cannot receive an actual degree for their studies. McKay events center will prepare for the most important event to take place since the completion. The dedication! On April 22, at 7 p.m. members of the community will gather in the newly completed events center, located on the northeast end of campus, to take place in the dedication. The events center, which bears the name of former president of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints was completed last fall, due to the healthy donation of an anonymous donor requesting that the center bear the name of David O. McKay. The McKay center, which was first proposed in June of 1990, was attractive from the beginning. When the issue was first given to the residents, Utah County voters responded by a 2-1 vote in favor. Memebers of Orem and Provo responded positively to the idea that the facility was big enough to host such events as high school basketball, wrestling tournaments, and concerts, but small enough to keep local residents happy. "This facility was built with the community in mind," said Brent Roberts, McKay Events Center director.
