Accidents are just one of the few examples of the on going traffic problems UVSC faces. Accreditation UVSC receives flying colors Keith Morris News Editor In the September 27, 1995 issue of the College Times, Sheila Banister reported, "The Northwest Association of Schools and College Commission on Colleges will be visiting UVSC again on Oct. 9-11. The association is coming to evaluate possible accreditation of UVSC's four year programs." Well, what happened? Did we pass or fail? What is accreditation? Banister points out that "accreditation is an evaluation process in which a team of eight people evaluate the performance, integrity, and quality which entitles them the confidence and respect of the public and education community." If anyone had doubts or concerns about UVSC and its four-year programs, they can rest assured, UVSC passed with flying colors. Joseph A. Malik, executive director of the Northwest Association of Schools and Colleges, (NWASC) in a letter to UVSC said," I am pleased to report that the accreditation of Utah Valley State College has been reaffirmed on the basis of the recent comprehensive self-study and full scale evaluation. Congratulations on receiving this continued recognition. Accordingly, the accredita- UVSC, Page 8 Multicultural Center Center promotes ethnic awareness Kami Fehrenbacker Managing Editor The Multicultural Center and Student Government is hosting the Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Commemoration on Thursday, January 18 as part of Civil Rights week. The program format entails an opening session with a keynote speaker, followed by mini conferences. The mission of the program is to promote the concept of human rights and human dignity. The conference will be based around Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.'s teachings of justice and peace. "Injustice anywhere is a threat to justice everywhere, all persons are caught in an inescapable network of mutuality, tied in a single garment of destiny" said King in his "Letters from Birmingham jail . All UVSC students, faculty, and staff as well as people from the community are invited to come and listen to the speakers. The program will start at 8 a.m. with a reception and registration in SC213. Then at 9 a.m. the opening session will start in the Ragan Theater. After the introduction Jeanetta Williams, Director of NAACP (National Association for the Advancement of colored persons) will be giving the keynote address. There will be a short break at 10:00 and then at 10:15 the mini conferences will begin. The theme for the workshops is "Valuing diversity in the community". Ethnic, Page 7 irvice Fun Run raises funds Craig Harter Senior New Editor UVSC students and faculty celebrated New Years Day by hosting and participating in a fun run to raise money for staff member Cordon Garrett who was diagnosed with terminal cancer. Gordon Garrett, a Physiology professor, was diagnosed with terminal cancer earlier this fall. Aside from the shocking diagnosis, Garrett was informed Run, Page 6 mi a gianee. !
