Traffic problems escalate Craig Harter Senior News Editor On Feb. 8 members of the UVSC Board of Trustees listened to the plans for depleting the traffic problems which have increased with enrollment growth. In December '95, it was announced that the increased traffic problems around the UVSC campus were causing a great stir among the residents living outside the Orem campus. As a result the residents gathered together to try and solve the problem. However, as time continues to pass there is still not a solution to this problem. "On Feb. 20 at 12 p.m. in the UVSC ballroom, residents will be heard upon their cries," said Val Peterson, assistant vice president for college relations. The purpose of the meeting will be to help students see the residents point of view as well as help to surface this ongoing battle. The recent expansion of the school has only led to more more traffic problems. With the opening of the David O. McKay Events Center came the need for even more traffic control. "The city of Orem closed the entrance leading to the events center with a promise to open it for each event taking place," said Kerry Romesburg, president of UVSC. When it came time for the Creedence Clearwater Revival concert the city did not remove the barriers, causing traffic to be backed up for miles, said Romesburg. President Kerry Romesburg is a member of the Utah steering committee for virtual university. Virtual university will let people who cannot get to a college campus, take classes through interactive technology. What's interactive? It's real conversations with people via computers, modems, televisions, and virtually any form of technology available today. Katherine A. Johnson, a student at UVSC said, "When are we supposed to meet people and have a social life if we sit in front of a computer all day?" Many students who are hearing about virtual university asked the same questions. Michelle Ford, an accounting major at UVSC said, "I like the personal interaction that I have when I go to class, I just don't think it would be the same." Romesburg, however, is very positive about the Virtual, Page 8 If you have ever had trouble getting on a computer in the fish-bowl, it will get a little bit easier due to the opening of a new computer lab during the week of Feb. 12-16 in room SB101. "The new computer lab will have the same programs as the old computer lab such as word processing, E-mail, and access to the internet," said Duke Heaton, network manager. Many students agree there is a definite need for a new lab. "I've had to wait for 40 minutes to use the lab before," said Jennifer Perron. "The lab is always busy between 10 a.m. and 2 p.m. and there are people waiting to come in," said Lab Assistant Kelvin Fung. "Students who come in are always asking if there is another lab open."
