A The Campus Services Fair will be held in the Hall of Flags on Aug. 28 and 29. September 2 is Labor Day. Rebecca McGettigan Sr. News Editor Parking procedures at UVSC will be going through many changes this fall when plans to improve campus parking conditions go into affect. These plans accompany the new changes in parking permit prices and parking lot designations that have already gone into effect. Many students were surprised to see that parking permits had almost doubled in price since last semester, with the most expensive permits selling for $60. These are only a part of the changes that parking procedures on campus will go through this fall. Students may also be surprised to see that parking fines also nearly doubled in price, with fines ranging from $10 to $100 depending on the violation. Although these prices are being raised, the cost for visitors parking will remain the same. Reasons for the new changes in parking policy stem from the results of a campus traffic and infrastructure review done by Fehr and Peers Traffic Consultants. Findings in the study suggested a need for improvements in many parking procedures. The results of the study not only suggested a raise in prices, but it also identified the need to restructure the parking lots. Plans to pave and add better lighting to some of the parking lots are already under way. The lots that Students can expect plenty of parking and traffic problems when construction begins on parking lots and the perimeter road this fall. are going to be paved are lots M and N. Better lighting in the parking lots is an issue that has concerned many in the past. The review of the parking system was done partly because the administration was receiving numerous complaints about the current system. Construction is expected to cost around $800,000. That cost will be partially covered by the raise in parking permit prices. Although construction is hoped to be completed before the end of fall semester, the exact date for construction to start has not been set. Campus officials hope to proceed with the parking lot construction at the same time as other road con- Photo by Hoon Yi. struction on campus. Exact dates for other road construction on campus have not been set yet either. Some changes include those made to the color coding of parking lots. A map of the new parking lot designations can be picked up at the UVSC parking offices. Campus crime: how to protect yourself Rebecca McGettigan Sr. News Editor As the number of students attending UVSC continues to grow there becomes an increasing need for crime awareness on campus. With the beginning of the school year, new students on campus should be aware of how to insure their personal safety and how to use other prevention methods to stop possible crimes from taking place. It is not hard to protect yourself and your property from any sort of crime. It is mostly just a matter of being aware of your surroundings. "People will just set there bag down on chair and go get a drink of water, and when they come back their bag is gone, "said Sterling Clark, UVSC Campus Police Officer. "Then when they report the incident they don't remember descriptions of anyone who was in the immediate area. At that point there is not much we can do." Clark also said many people don't lock their car doors on campus, or notice something like a person following Ihem to their car at night. "We've had two people reporting their cars being broken into just this week." said Clark. Students are not the only ones who are victimized though. Different department offices on campus have had problems with property being stolen right out of their offices. All these situations are easily prevented by doing just a few simple things. Measures have already been taken to secure offices more tightly by putting different locks on office doors that instead of requiring a key, require a number code surveillance system is also being considered for certain areas of the school. Cameras would be set up in the busier parts of campus to observe any possible crimes. But even more important then the prevention measures that the school is taking are prevention measures students can take. Just observing surroundings could save someone the inconvenience of having their bag stolen. When you set your bag or other possessions down for any reason, look around you and notice who is Crime, continued on page 12 9HHii mcni imnSiMlitiMii.! mi ii i i ii JlBBBBBBi The UVSC Ballroom Dance formation team recently won first place at the Deseret Challenge Competition.
