Synergy is sponsoring four local bands for $4. The event wll be from 7 p.m. to !1 p.m. in the UVSC Ballroom. The bands that will be playing are Pastry Bandits, Racoons, The Shakes, The Red Bennies. The Freedom Rings club will j&J an organizational meeting Tuesday, Oct. 8 at 7 p.m. in FA722. Regular meetings are scheduled for the 2nd and 4th Tuesday of each month. This club is for students who are gay, lesbian, bisexual, or for heterosexual family members or friends of those who are. An "Octciberfesf Dance" dance party will be held October 2, from 9:00 pm to 1:00 am in the U.V.S.C. Ballroom. Admission for the dance, sponored by the "CompuNet" club, is $3. lljfj 'President's Council has approved a change in our Fall semester dates. Classes will not be held Wednesday, Nov. 27. They will, however, be held Friday, Nov. 8. The Community College Conference scheduled for Nov. 8 was cancelled. Input recieved from the student body officers and the faculty senate supported the change. Ji 4b There's a lot more in the Hall of Flags than flags, chairs and glass there's the Internet. UVSC students can now plug in to the "net," send and receive e-mail and surf from the hall. Ten line stations have been installed in the Hall of Flags for student use. Details can be obtained through the computer services department 222-8160. Wi Mountain Bikers wanted: Outdoor Recreation is planning a biking trip to White Rim in southern Utah. The trip is from Nov. 7 through Nov. 9, and anyone interested is invited. Sign up tor the trip in the Outdoor Recreation Office (SCI 03). The cost is $85 and covers everything but your bike, helmet, sleeping bag, and tent. $25 is due by Oct. 4 to hold your spot. Mii Arc you interested in an underwater adventure? Outdoor Recreation is planning a trip to Catalina Island, from Thursday Nov. 21 lo Monday Nov. 25. The cost is $350. This covers transportation, lodging, food on Catalina, gear rental and tank rentals. Fitness tour comes Rebecca McGettigan Sr. News Editor UVSC students had the chance to learn a little bit more about their health and wellness thanks to Collegiate Health and Fitness Tour who visited the campus with activities, information, and free samples. The Tour, which was held outside in the Quad, was brought to campus by the Office of Alcohol and Drug Ed and Health Awareness Klub with the intention to educate the students and promote healthy lifestyles and activities. Students wandered outside to receive free samples, such as Suntan lotion, condoms, iced tea, and more through Sept. 23 and 24. Students also received free T-shirts for completing Discover Card applications. Several booths with information pertaining to maintaining a healthy lifestyle were set up for students to stop by and receive free information. If students visited every booth and obtained a signature at each booth they were eligible to enter to win a Jeep Wrangler, an Eagle Talon Sedan, or an eight-day cruise. Different activities, ranging from sumo-wrestling to rock climbing, were also set up for students to enjoy. Some activities, like the vcl-cro wall, were fairly easy. Others required a little more physical activity, like the climbing wall, showing some students just how healthy they are. Informative brochures and IQ tests were also a part of the events. Students could test their knowledge on a variety of different health related subjects. A machine to measure blood pressure was also set up for student use. McKay statue unveiled Ryan Oler Staff Writer The legacy of David O. McKay shined on UVSC as a crowd of more than 200 gathered to honor him in a half-hour ceremony Friday, Sept. 27. The 9:00 ceremony was devoted to the "official" unveiling of the one-of-a-kind statue of David O. McKay, located on the west side of the new McKay Events center. The ceremony drew such social figures as Elder M. Russell Ballard, Apostle in the LDS Church, renowned artist and sculptor, Ortho Fairbanks, and several national, state, and local leaders. The statue, which stands more than nine feet tall, is the only known heroic-size statue of David O. McKay; it was sculpted by Ortho Fairbanks, the only artist for whom McKay would pose for a portrait bust. Each , of the speakers expressed their love and admiration for David O. McKay us well as their strong desires to have everyone, especially students here at UVSC, emulate his characteris Ik Free samples attracted students to the Health and Fitness Tour last week at UVSG. nmuihouuuhmmiuuh The Health and Fitness Tour, which hits the road every year in August, started out exclusively as an east coast tour, but it has now expanded to the west coast making it the largest collegiate tour in the nation. The tour covers about one hundred schools throughout its visit. Members of the tour help promote wellness and endorse the message of the tour. These members tics. Alan Ashton, McKay's grandson and UVSC trustee, spoke of the love and compassion of 'Father Dave'. UVSC President, Kerry D. Romesburg said of the statue, "This is a symbol that we hope will motivate our students to emulate the qualities of this great man." The statue serves as a memorial to David O. McKay and lets people know what kind of man he was and what kind of qualities we are urged to replicate. "We hope that all who share a fondness for this man will make an effort lo see this moving piece of art," President Romesburg added. Fairbanks stressed David O. McKay's commitment and devotion to education. "He committed a virtual library at memory." said Fairbanks, lie added that he depicted McKay in his graduation robes to emphasize his commitment to education. "David O. McKay's life was a beautiful masterpiece" declared Fairbanks. Photo by Dave Robinson Wellness center fees change On Thursday, September 19, the UVSC Student Council received and voted on a proposition concerning the UVSC Wellness center. The proposition included allowing faculty and staff of UVSC (who had previously not been able to use the wellness center) to have access to the center, with a $25 co-payment for each appointment.The proposal also granted the Wellness center the consent to raise the price on "special exams" (which include total physicals and female exams) from the normal $3co-payment to a $25 fee. These proposals were received by the voting members of the council and the vote was cast unanimously in favor of the proposals, whose effective dates are October 1. UVSC Student Council Chief Justice, Andrea Brinkhurst, then acknowledged a fair vote, and the proposals were passed. Also proposed was an increase in the Studentco-payment of $3 to $5 per examination. The student council requested more information about the consequences of this action, and the voting was postponed in favor of research on the matter.
