Basketball Small-town disdain Robert Johnson Staff writer For three days of solitary protest, Ray Herrera has picketed the lawn of the Springville Police Station trying to find justice. Herrera's sign reads, "Springville Police Force or "Farce" cover-up, equal justice for everyone." Herrera was charged with theft based on an allegation by his ex-wife claiming that he stole various items from her. According to a letter written by Herrera's attorney to Springville Police Chief Swen Nielsen, "The witnesses of the theft were never questioned. The witnesses listed Jerry Rose, Lisa Herrera and Jenny Herrera as witnesses to the actual theft, but did not contact or dismiss the facts with any of these witnesses prior to submitting the matter to the prosecutor." The letter goes on to say, "Criminal charges were brought against Herrera without any person having interviewed any of the witnesses to the alleged crime." Herrera feels because of this he has been unjustly accused of a crime he says he, "didn't commit." Herrera plans to stay put during his free time until he, "gets some resolution." Lt. Dave Kron of th Springville Police Department could not comment on the situation.City Attorney Harrold Mitchell, although he had not replied yet, said, "the Police Department did not act improperly." The prosecutor in the case has dropped the charges because, "It wasn't worth the trauma to the children to question them so the charges were dismissed." Mr. Herrera and his attorney are considering prosecuting Babara Fullmer for giving false information to a police officer and expect reimbursement for the $1,000.00 in legal fees. The traffic-congestion saga at UVSC continued Monday, Mar. 4, when residents and officials gathered to study an ambitious plan to construct a European-style roundabout at UVSC's main entrance. Ron Mortimer, a traffic consultant with Fehr & Peers Associates, Inc., Murray, Utah, began the 'open house' by stating that "traffic problems along 1300 South cannot be mitigated easily. In addition, there are concerns with traffic flow on 400 West, 800 West, 800 South, and 1200 West. If we can improve access to the 1200 South entrance, it will draw traffic from every other entrance on campus." Ideally, the roundabout will provide a simpler, delay-free route for students entering and leaving campus. Compared to traditional 'signalized' intersections, the traffic flow in a roundabout intersection is continuous, usually only requiring a brief yield before entering the intersection."Rather than having to deal with two or even three at a four-way stop directions of traffic, the driver only has to look left before entering the intersection," Mortimer said.
