TIMES Across 1 AMPUS VETERAN'S DAY was ceieoratea in front of the Administration building Friday, I November 9, at 9 a.m. KUlt presented the colors in addition to the band playing the national anthem. President Romesburg and vice president Dr. Chappell addressed th public which included over 100 veterans who are employees or faculty at UVSC This was the first time Veteran's day was celebrated at UVSC. Vthe office of the Guardian Ad litem for the Fourth District Juvenile Court is seeking concerned volunteers to assist attorneys who represent abused and neglected children. Volunteers are needed to ensure that a child's right to a safe and permanent home is acted on by the court. Training is provided. Please contact Lisa Miller or Judi Adams at 344-8516 if you are interested. VFREE CHILDREN'S IMMUNIZATIONS are available at the Wellness Center or children of students, staff and faculty. This is a free program for those who qualify under the following criteria: l)Children without health insurance. 2) Children enrolled in the Medicaid program. 3) Native or Alaskan native children. 4) Underinsured children (children whose health insurance does not cover the cost of vaccines). For more information please call 222-8873. VUVSC MEN'S ICE HOCKEY club meetings are Mondays at 2 p.m. in SB 201. If you love to play hockey or want to learn how to play, come join us. A fashion show, one of the many activities of the Winter Extravaganza, was held on Friday Nov. 10 in the UVSC Ballroom. With the first snowfall out of the way, retailers are working their hardest to persuade winter sport enthusiasts to stock up on this years hottest arrivals. See related story on Page 14. Registration botched as classes near Ryan Wilde Staff Writer You've gotta love registration for winter semester;the joys of finding classes you want that fit into your tight schedule,the sheer bliss you may experience when the one class you need is full,and don't forget, you still need to study for your classes this semester. The first day for early registration arrived. And so did the long lines since the touch tell registration was down. One more thing to add to the pleasures of registering. Director of Computer Services, Tom Rasmussen, explained the installation of a new student information system con tributed to the touch tell registration lines being down. "The new system was installed a week and a half before registration," said Rasmussen. "We knew it would take special programming to make it work, it just took a lot longer than we anticipated." Rasmussen said the existing program has to be re-written so it will be compatible with telephone registration. One technician has put an equivalent of four weeks work into the past nine days, said Rasmussen. "He literally worked around the clock." "As of right now, we are only about six hours away from having the phone registration back in operation," he said. The only students who were really hurt by the phone lines being down were those who were unable to come to campus. Rasmussen said while some students complained about waiting in long lines, most were very patient. "Once we realized we were going to have a problem with registration, we formed a battle plan so students could register everywhere possible," said Rasmussen. Rasmussen said many students liked registering for classes on campus.He said students like to see the registration process rather than hear it over the phone. Hinckley, president of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, presented President Bill Clinton with his partially completed family tree. The visit, which came after an invitation from the White House, gave the two leaders an opportunity to discuss families. "We gave a set for the president, a set for Mrs. Clinton and a set for Chelsea," President Hinckley said. President Clinton looked through the genealogy, and was said to have been intrigued. Hinckley also gave the president a copy of the recently released proclamation on the family. The statement, which was released by the church's First Presidency and the Hinckley, Page 8
