It's basketball season again, and UVSC's men 's and women 's basketball teams are ready to get rolling on the road to a championship in the Scenic West Athletic Conference By Brian Hulse of The College Times Yessir, it's that time of the year again. The serene scents of festive fun are wafting perpetually closer towards the taste buds of every sports fan as the grand moment approaches. The fresh aromas of winter sports are causing spectators to salivate in a Pavlov-esque style. Most chumps would mistake this description of winter sports drool for the opening of a pack of Doublemint gum. Yes, the ignorant folks should just gnaw on a few sticks of chicle at this point, but the true spectators understand that an issue larger than anyPlen-T-Pafk is being addressed. Basketball season is here. Lace up the high tops, grab the gym shorts, pump up the ol' Spalding and get ready for hoopalicious treats. This year, the women's and men's basketball teams are poised to make a run at the Scenic West Athletic Conference crown. Both teams have appetites for lighting up the McKay Center with their decidedly exciting brand of basketball. The College Times recognizes that their competitive hunger pangs for W's and championships are too sharp to go unnoticed. This year, for the first time ever, The College Times has prepared extensive coverage of the men's and women's basketball programs, including in-depth looks at the team's coaches and their players. In addition, we have prepared an extensive NBA preview. Of course, to make all this possible, we had to bend a few traditions and rules in the newsroom. The Opinion and Scene editors of the paper graciously sacrificed some of their coveted page space for our sporty cause. Even the Sports section's "The Hard Way" and "No Hulse Barred" were, indeed, barred this week (this issue is that important). So, peruse the pages, get to know the teams and come support them in the McKay Center this season. limes Allen Hill examines the removal (sev eral Rodin sculptures from an an exhibit at Brigham Young University See page 6 I u f ill ip E TIME INSIDE The Coaching Staffs Men's team, Page 7 Women's team, Page 8 The Players Men's starting five, Page 7 Women 's starting five, Page 8 The Competition The opposition in the Scenic West Athletic Conference will be sized up for both the men 's and women's teams, Page 9 Photo Essay Photographer Steve Hansen spent an afternoon with the women's basketball team during practice, Page 1 NBA Preview A look at the new season, Page 10 RUNNING BRAVE: Beau Archibald (front, with ball) and B.J. The Utah Catzz of the newly-formedProfessional Indoor Football League officially announced at a press conference last Wednesday that they will play their home games at the David O. McKay events center on the Utah Valley State College campus. Michael Curran, owner and general manager of the Catzz and co-founder of the PIFL said the Catzz will call the McKay Events Center the "Catzz Den" and will begin play there Dec. 20 against the Texas Bullets. Curran named Gordon Hudson, former BYU and Seattle Seahawks player as head coach. Hudson has most recently been the offensive coordinator for the San Jose SaberCats of the Arena league and knows the indoor football game well. "It's a tot like hockey, only faster paced. ..It's in your face football," he said The newly formed PIFL features eight teams and hopes to add another eight next season. The rules are similar to those of the Arena league featuring eight players on a 50 yard field. The game is very different from traditional 100 yard football however. "It takes a special breed of kid to play this game. There are NFL players who can't play this game as well as some of the guys we've got." Hudson said. The talent pool comes primarily from local players. With five universities to choose from, the Catzz feel like they can get some good players. Part of the league's mission statement is to give these local . players a chance to move up into higher leagues like the NFL. The Catzz roster includes former BYU players Tyler Anderson (who also played football at Orem High School) and Otis Sterling. "My goal since BYU is to play in the pros and this can help me do it," Anderson said. Additionally, playing in this league is only a part-time job, allowing players to have careers off the field. The Catzz originally intended to play at the Delta Center, but scheduling conflicts there and high costs at the E-center in West Valley City brought them to McKay Events Center. Curran says that this was the place to be though. "The attitude of the college and administrators here made us feel like we were at home." The Center will hold about 6,000 fans and tickets will range from $8-$38. The Catzz hope to make it an affordable family sport offering family food and game packages. The Catzz will play the West Virginia Wizards, a hopeful expan sion team Dec. 6 and hold another open try-out before the home opener Dec. 20. Gordon named as his defensive coordinator Vince Tauanuu and Bill Price as offensive coordinator. Tauanuu played two years at the University of Utah, and Price has held numerous positions in football including University of Washington recruiter and high school coach. What is indoor : football?
