Student body officers for 1990-91 have been chosen and were given the oath of office at the annual Achievement Awards Banquet May 16. Kelly Bitters is the new Student Body President Serving with him will be Eric Laver as Academics Vice-President and Tawnya Smith as Activities Vice- president.New senators and specialists have also been chosen. Donna King will serve as Night School Senator, Paul Grimes as Health Senator, Cynthia Pulsipher as Non-Traditional Senator, Joey Miles as Science Senator, Allison Ford as General Studies Senator, Margaret McMulIen as General Studies Specialist, J.C. Steele as Business Senator, and Robert McClcllan as TechnologyProvo CampusSenator. The position of Trades Senator has not been filled yet Sophia Walker is the new Senate Secretary. Dave Williams was elected to serve as president of the Inter Club Council (ICQ. The Activities Committee has also filled most of its positions. Gary Winterton has been chosen as Social Chairperson, Penny Laver as Cultural Chairperson, Rees Healey as Special Events Chairperson, Lori Berntsen as Publicity Chairperson, and Taffy Lovell as Public Relations Chairperson. Specialists will also be appointed .in each of these areas to help the chairpersons carry out the activities. The offices of Assistant to the President and Ombudsman have yet to be filled and will be announced at a later date. Commencement is June 8, five valedictorians named Students graduating from UVCC will participate in commencement exercises at 6:00 p.m., June 8, in the amphitheater on the Orem campus. Over 1,000 students are scheduled to receive degrees or certificates from the college. The number of graduates is up almost 100 students over last year. "Commencement is a time when students realize their educational goals," said Kerry D. Romesburg, UVCC president. "For some, graduating from UVCC will be the beginning of the careers for which they have so diligently studied and worked; for others, it is a hard-earned and well-deserved step in pursuit of further education and training. For all, it is a time for celebration and reflection." Donald B. Holbrook, a former member of the Utah State Board of Regents,, will, be the, commence7 , ment speaker. "Holbrook is one of the premier architects of higher education in Utah," said Romesburg. "His 20 years as a regent and education leader bring unique qualifications as a commencement speaker. The college is honored to have him speak as commencement"The college will present Holbrook and Orville Gunther, of American Fork, with honorary doctorate degrees. Holbrook will receive an honorary doctorate of humanities and fine arts; Gunther will receive an honorary doctorate of business and industries. Gunther, who was one of the original instructors at the college and who the college's technology building is named after, is a longtime supporter of UVCC. He serves as a member of the UVCC Foundation Board and also served , the community in countless ways. . ) UVCC has named five valedictorians for the 1989-90 year. Cyndi Le Cox, Cindy C. Fowlkes, Gary Robert Brian, Robert L. Alleman and Todd Ray Brewster have been selected to represent various schools within the college. Cox will represent the over 1,000 graduates as the valedictorian speaker at commencement. Cox, from Orem, will represent the school of business and is graduating with an associate of applied science degree in business management. After graduating from UVCC Cox plans to continue her education at the University of Utah where she will pursue a degree in marketing. Cindy C. Fowlkes, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Vidian J. Christensen of Provo, will represent the school of allied health. Fowlkes, who is the mother of two, will be receiving her LPN . in practical nursing. Fowlkes plans to enter the associate degree nursing program at UVCC this fall where she will work towards her RN degree. The school of trades and industries will be represented by Gary Robert Brian, from Loa, Utah. Brian will be receiving his associate of applied science in auto mechanics and is currently working for University Hyundai as a mechanic. The school of technology will be represented by Robert L. Alle- Commencement Continued on page 5 Last Chance to Dance Friday By Crisy Talley Staff Writer It's your last chance, so don't let it pass by! June 1 at 9:00 p.m. is the Last Chance to Dance. This is a free dance and, in the past it has always had a huge turn out. It will be outside on the patio above the Bookstore. The music will be good and the company even better. So, don't miss your last chance to boogie before the quarter ends and the fun begins. Football proposal defeated by Board of Regents. See story on page 15
