News & Feature Editor Dan Quayle, Vice President of the United States, is comming to UVCC tomorrow, November 1, to campaign for Third Congressional Candidate Karl Snow. Quayle will fly into Provo City Airport on Air Force Two then motorcade to theOrem campus for a public rally in the Activities Center. The rally starts at 1 p.m. and will include an address from the vice president. Students must have tickets to get in. This trip is the first by a Vocational enrollment decreases in 1990 Garilee Speer Staff Writer In the last five years, the VocationalTechnical enrollment,which includes Allied Health, Business, TechnologyTrades and Continuing Education,has decreased 23 percent.The General Education enrollment, which includes all Associate of Science and Associate of Arts major ,has increased 23percent. The change is not a decrease, but a change in programs. When UVCC was changed from a Technical School to a Community College,it was for the benefit of the community. Many people in the area were looking for a wider variety in their education, therefore UVCC came about. This semester the headcount for those enrolled in General Studies is 4,513. For those enrolled inVocational-Technical Programs the headcount is 3,373. There are 14 percent more students attending UVCC for General Studies purposes. The change in our school was to expand the 19 issue 10 31 October 1990 utah valley UVCC on behalf of Snow sitting vice president in almost 20 years and is, according to Snow's public relations department, "...to pay tribute to the Third District for being the most Republican district in the nation." .The visit is "part of a string of events that the vice president is participating in on that day," said a member of the Snow campaign committee. Quayle will be flying in from Nebraska. After the rally he will visit California to help the Republican effort there. Quayle will attend a private reception at UVCC prior to his address. curriculum. But, UVCC is still the one school in the state that offers more vocational courses than any other school. 70 percent of all funding that goes toward instruction at UVCC goes to Vocational departments.Dr. Lucille Stoddard, Vice President of Academic Affairs said, "We want everyone to know that our commitment to Vocational Programs is still very high." Therefore,the course will be completed in one semester rather than one year. Weekend and night classes are another possibility. UVCC is now in the process of submitting eight new programs to better it's VocationalTechnical Programs. Besides the fact that UVCC is doing so well with it's Vocational Programs, it is also working hard to help the community education and interests in General Studies. community college 1 Lenhardt named foreign language teacher of the year -Tracy Black Staff Writer Ruediger Lehnardt has recently been named Utah Foreign Language Association Teacher of the year for 1990-91. A committee of teachers in Utah decide who is most qualified to receive this honor. The award is based on the teacher's accomplishments, involvement, and contributions to the school where they teach. This is not Lehnardt's first honor. In 1982, he was also chosen as teacher of the year i at UVCC in the same area. Lehnardt is from East Berlin, Germany. He came to Utah in 1955 and now lives in Orem. He is happily married and has six children. Lehnardt said, " I love Utah. I love living here. I love the mountains and hiking. I love nature and swimming in the reservoir. This is one fine place!" Lehnardt came to UVCC in 1975. He began teaching math part-time and then signed a contract to teach full-time in 1976. He has his masters degree in German. In 1987 Lehnardt organized the German program at UVCC. In three years he has attracted 80 students into the German club and classes. Lehnardt is actively involved in extracurricular activities at UVCC. He is currently the advisor of the German Club and presides over the Octoberfest held yearly at UVCC. Some other contributions to UVCC include Lehnardt being on the curriculum committee, faculty senate and parking committee. See LEHNARDT, page 8
