I Students assuming the roles of freedom fighting East - Germans, West Germans, and police were divided by a tem- ' porary wall constructed of cardboard boxes, glue, and tape, located in the courtyard. As the scenario climaxed, students bearing signs that read "FREIHEIT," meaning freedom, overran the East German police and gained access to the Berlin Wall. West German crowds , cheered as the Wall was knocked to the ground. East Germany finally gained its ' freedom. "After 40 years of being imprisoned. ..to be free is an ; ode to joy," said Rudi Leh- , nardt, UVCC instructor and coordinator of the event. "This ' celebration provides UVCC Students 'out Salli Brown Staff Writer Married students attending school in Utah Valley, either at UVCC, BYU, or any other college, have most likely noticed a shortage in housing. Waiting lists, high rent, and scarcity of apartments pose huge problems for students looking for a place to live. Tom Hover, Director of Student Life at UVCC, is a part of a task force set-up by the County Comissioners office. Increase awareness is exactly what it did. During construction of UVCC's Berlin Wall, many on a limb' with housing in such difficulties in finding housing. The task force is also in search of a possible solution. The results should be in at the end of this month. According to Hover, the reasons for the shortage of housing is profit. "Because of lack of Federal subsidies, tax-adjustments, and high interest rates, people are not willing to build and construct housing because it isn't profitable." He also said it is difficult to get banks to loan money because of the potential loss of money. Questions were answered and students became more involved with the activity. Immediately following to invest in married housing, so married students suffer. There is less than one percent of available housing in Utah Valley to house all the students attending college (UVCC and BYU combined). That means that 99 percent of married students are without housing. This results is students living outside the Utah Valley boundaries and commuting. Many students live in Springville or American Fork, but some students commute from Salt Lake City to attend colleges in Utah Valley. Approximately 3,000 stu 10 October 1990 page 1 the destruction of the wall, everyone was invited to participate in a discussion with German exchange students and staff. The celebration ended with a traditional German polka dance class. Utah Valley dents must commute. Another problem with housing is, students are looking for low income housing which is scarce. John Pace, Director of off-campus housing and also a member of the task force, believes some of the reasons for lack of housing is because of "increased population, not necessarily enrollment increase....
