n Ml i so n n ii wmm Vol. 6 No. 25 hmlm Mr. Gashut Impressed by By Robert Hopkins Thursday, April 13, Mr. Shaban Gashut, Charge d'Affaires and Senior Diplomat for the Libyan Government, visited the UTCProvo and Orem Campuses. The purpose of Mr. Gashut's visit was to gain "on site" knowledge of the campus facilities, staff and administration for a report he will make to the Libyan Government recommending that students be sent to for technical training. Libya suffers from an acute shortage of technically skilled personnel. Presently there are 1,000,000 foreign technical personnel and families, including 4,000 Americans, in Libya filling the jobs in the growing economy that cannot be filled by Libyans. To counter this, the Libyan Government will shortly begin a 5 year, $40,000,000,000 frogram to upgrade the evel of education and technical skills of the native population. Mr. Gashut believes that the foundation for 4 1 St" The preliminary election was held last Friday. Final elections will be held Friday at both campuses from 8 to 2. "White collar worker," he says, "can accomplish nothing without highly skilled workers. Skilled workers are the foundation of a nation's economy." Met in Washington Mr. Gashut heard of UTCP while in Washington, D.C. and had occasion to meet President Sorensen there. Mr. Gashut mentioned that he was favorably impressed with the college's reputation in the electronics fields and welding. Electronics and welding are vital skills necessary in the petroleum and petroleum exploration fields. Mr. Gashut mentioned that, as a Moslem, he is favorably impressed with the Mormon attitude concerning alcohol. Alcohol cannot be purchased in Libya and there are penalties for possession and consumption of alcohol. Libya is a large, sparsely populated UTAH TECHNICAL COLLEGE AT Mr. Shaban Gashut, Charge D'Affaires and Senior Diplomat for the Libyan government visited the UTC campuses recently. He heard country, located in north Africa between Egypt and Algeria. It is traditionally a Moslem nation. Libya is the fifth largest producer of crude oil in the world. Only the United States, Soviet Union, Saudi Arabia and 1 1 1 PROVO Iran produce more oil than Libya. Mr. Gashut graduated from the University of Libya in 1963 and joined the Libyan Diplomatic Corps a year later. While in the diplomatic corps he served his Students Elected to Finals By Patti Stead President Vice President Bruce Burnett is a native of Las Vegas, Nevada. He is majoring in Electrical Automation and Technology. He has a 4.0 grade point average. Mr. Burnett is active in sports and church affairs. He has been in the Air Force in Thailand. Bill Olds is a native of Provo, Utah. His major is Electrical Automation and Technology. Since returning to Libya in 1972 he has represented Libya in five Ministerial Level conferences and two summit meetings in Africa. He has also been a delegate to the Arab-African Cooperation Conferences and the African Liberation Committee. In 1973 he represented the United Nations on a fact finding mission to the Schedule April 22Passover April 26 Secretaries' Day April 27-Forum, 10 a.m., Orem Student Center April 28--50's Dance, "Malibu Review," 8:30-12 p.m. April 38--Baseball, UTCP vs Ricks April 28--Great Friday AprU 29-Baseball, UTCP vs Ricks April 30-Orthocloi Easter April 24, 2978 TechP J Phillipines. Mr. Gashut will return to Libya in September to assume a top level position in the Libyan Government. Modernization Through his work with Libyan students in this country he has sought to transfer modern technological methods to Libya and sees technical training as the next step towards the goal of a modern, economically independent,self-sufficient nation. of Events
