Vol. 9 No. 4 OFFICIAL NEWSPAPER OF UTAH TECHNICAL COLLEGE AT PROVOOREM Oct. 31, 1980 Sfudenfs Clear Issues The political race between candidates is now in the homestretch. Last Wednesday the contestants from the various Parties met in a public forum at both UTC campuses. The major topic concerning these meetings was initiative A & B and propositions one thru four. Senator Karl Snow Jr. of Provo, presented his viewpoint in the affirmative for all four proposals on this years ballot. He stands in favor of proposition one which concerns the Executive Article revision, proposition two the revenue and taxation Article revision, proposition three which concerns the release of Prison inmates on rehabilitation work outside the walls of that correctional institution, and proposition four the raise in compensation for legislators. Explaining the harmful effects of initiative A B to the students gathered was State Tax Commissioner ' Robert D. Bowen. j There were other ' political candidates here ; also among them being ; Dan Berman who is running for the Senate s seat against incumbent : Jake Garn, and Jim s Hansen who is in the congressional race opposing Congressman Gunn McKay. They were ? sponsored on behalf of the Circle K Club. ' 4 Several informed public servants, and persons seeking public office came to UTC Wednesday to debate Iniatives "A" & "B", as well as discuss their political campaigns. The cheerleaders for the 1980-81 season are (clockwise): Kelly Korous, Debbie Horn, head cheerleader; Tiffeni St. James, Jana Anderson, Michelle Peck, and Ellie Davis (center). Cheerleaders Chosen By Becky Bridges Two weeks ago try-outs for cheerleaders were held. Ten girls tryed nut. however, only six of the ten were chosen to represent the Wolverines. Debbi Horn, a legal secretary major from 111., v;is chosen head cheerleader. The others include Michelle Peck, a fashion merchandising major from Lehi; Janet Anderson, general education major from Orem:Kelly Korous, a secretary major from Lchi; Tiffeni St. James, a legal secretary major from Salt Lake City and Ellie Davis, a special education major from Spanish Fork. Ellie. Tiffeni and Kelly have all been cheerleaders in high school. The girls do a variety of activities from promoting spirit to making signs. They will represent all sporting events but mostly basketball and baseball. Their routines vary from dances to actual cheers. The girls work out about 8 hours a week. They will cheer at the first game on November 19th. The girls would like every one to come out and get involved. Students Desired to Donate to Dracula p3 . . ' .1 . October 31 of each year is celebrated as Halloween. A season of Ghosts, Ghouls, Goblins, blood givers and blood takers. . The In-termountain Red Cross blood services people will be on hand this Friday to help take your blood. The Organization serves 45 hospitals throughout Far Western States. They have offered these services since 1952. Tables for registration and donation will be set up in the Student Center. Only one unit (less than a pint) is taken at each donation. The actual donation takes less than ten minutes. There are certain guidelines one must follow though. Red Cross Blood Services ask that donors eat within three to four hours of donation. The following is a list of donor requirements: YOU MAY DONATE IF: -You are between 17 and 65 years of age. (Must have parental consent if 17) -Your last blood donation was at least 8 weeks ago. -Your allergy is not active on day of donation. -It has been 3 days since oral surgery or tooth extraction, if there is no infection. -You are a diabetic NOT on insulin (oral or injection) for contol. -You weigh at least 110 pounds. -You are in good health. -If taking an antibiotic for acne, last dose must be 48 hours ago. YOU MAY NOT DONATE IF: -You have any history of cancer. -You have had repeated fainting spells or loss of consciousness. -You have had hepatitis-yellow jaundice in your life. -You have come in contact with hepatitis-yellow jaundice within the last 6 months. -You are taking antibiotics - orally must wait 48 hours, injections . must wait 2 weeks. -You have a cold, flu, sore throat, or cold sore with cold symptoms. -You have had major surgery or blood transfusion within the last 6 months. -You are pregnant now or have had a pregnancy in last 6 months.
