f - . - v v Monday, May 4, 1987 PBL Members Off to Nationals in California Fourteen members of UTC's Rho Lambda Chapter of PBL competed in the State Conference held April 24 and 25 at Utah Technical College, Salt Lake. Members competed against both four-year and two-year colleges in business areas. Chapter members competing included Von Crockett, Paul Hacking, Sherry Harward, Lisa Justet, Mia Lee, Norman Noble, Roger Olcott, Dennis Park, Chris Rode, Michael Spilsbury, Mike Storm, Alan Tsoi, and Jill Young. Other members attending the conference were Debbie Christensen, Pat Devenish, Jan Johnson, Anne McCormack, and Advisor Hugh CHAPTER Goal Seal Chapter State Project Outstanding Project Local Chapter Annual Report Community Service Volleyball Bus. Person of the Year Who's Who in PBL Superior Rating Gospel Musical to be Presented Utah Valley Community College at Orem will present "Godspell," a delightful and moving musical, May 7-9 and 11 at 8 p.m. The play, which is derived from the Gospel of Matthew, features such great musical numbers as "You are the Light of the World," "By My Side," and the song most associated with it over the last 20 years, "Day by Day." The play has been freely adapted by Director Kim I. Brewster to reflect the attitudes of the '80s and the local community. "To me, the play has always been a very entertaining show, but I wanted it to go beyond simple entertainment and become a spiritual experience as well. I think we have succeeded. People who see this play will certainly be entertained, but I believe they will be moved emotionally by it," Brewster said. The show features a talented cast of 13 college students and community adults. Playing the role of Jesus will be Paul Huchlmann, who lists many credits at both BYU, UTC, community and professional theater productions. Others featured in the ensemble cast are Jason Ayon, TJ. Brewster, Scott Ditty, Jon Peterson, Andrea Blake, Monica Fcrnclius, Dinah Gifford, Scott Finck, Roy Gustaveson, Moneca Nieves, Rose Powell, Tony Whitakcr and Laura Whipple. A live combo will feature DceAnn Hall and other cast members on piano and synthesizer and Jon Peterson on drums and guitar. "I think the show has gotten "is, V Rode. Members receiving first and second place in an event will have the opportunity to compete on a national level, by attending the National Conference held in Anaheim, California, July 5-8. This will be the first year that second place winners will also be sent to the conference. Members may compete in an event every othr year on the state level and only once in an event on the national level. All 16 first place medal winners are now qualified to attend the 23rd National Convention in Wichita, Kansas, June 22-27. The stale competition included students from Brigham Young University, Utah Technical College at Salt Lake, Southern Utah State College, Snow College, and Utah Technical College at ProvoOrcm. '"' M i Construction of New Science Building to Begin in July by Tom Green Beginning the first of July, the area located just south of the recently built Student Activity Center will begin its transformation from a student parking lot to UVCC's new Science Building. The building, according to Dr. Dick Chappell, vice president of Administrative Services and Planning, will begin its first phase of construction in July. This first phase will consist mainly of getting the site prepared for actual construction; it will continue until the first part of October. The second phase of the new Science Building project will begin around October 15, said Chappell. Chappell feels that by the fall of 1989, students and faculty will be fully utilizing the facilities of this building. That will be, according to Chappell, "A landmark building to take us from just another community college." Courses included in the plans for this modern science structure will include such disciplines as botany to zoology, from inorganic and organic chemistry to physics, from microbiology to earth sciences and genetics. Chappell also stress that this complex will be equal to any science building in the state. He feels that the subjects and courses that will be taught there will be transferable to other major universities as prerequisites for mcd-school and other science-oriented fields. at State VICA.
