rmsmmt V y si. Monday, May 18 1987 It Takes More than by Connie Kearney Keeping a large cruiser afloat takes more than the captain. Many calloused hands fix and repair equipment, paint walls and wash windows, serve food and water lowers, all for the beautification of the ship and the enjoyment of the passengers. So it is in keeping UVCC afloat Many hands work for the self and pleasure of life on UVCC campuses. Bob Clark, assistant director of the Physical Plant and Grounds, says that keeping the college running properly is a team effort. "A lot of tribute has to be paid to the students, faculty and administration," he says. "Without the support of the students we could not do the job we do." According to Clark, he is about 40 percent understaffed compared to other institutions of this size. He also feels the 'support of administration funding with tough budget cuts. Under the charge of Lynn Brouch, Physical Plant and Maintenance director, grounds, custodial services, maintance of equipment, remodeling and electronics as well as HUAC (Health, Air-Condition Priest Calls Arms bv Janet Crawford On May 13, 1987, Father Peter Dougherty, the priest of the Diocese of Lansing, Michigan, spoke to UVCC students about peaceful resistance against the nuclear arms race. Dougherty said that he has taken a covenant for peace and to confront the arms race. He said he wants to, "present a different vision than what we've built up over the past four decades." During the lecttye, Dougherty said that the United States tends to demonize the Soviet Union, and that we have been taught to hate and fear it. He called the two nations "mirror images" of each other and that they are in the same blind spot. "You're both messing with my life and I'm outraged. You, the White House and you, the Kremlin, I'm tired of it. It's stupidity," he said. He called the arms race a strategy of madness, saying that each side would destroy the other. After giving some background on the beginning of the arms race, Dougherty indicated that the United States has played the offensive role, with the Soviet Union "always behind, always catching up." He said that our "cold warriors" in Washington have the passion to launch a nuclear weapon attack and destroy the Soviet Union. Dougherty also called the Star Wars Defense Initiative absurd, saying that missiles would still get through the shield and that it also proved that the United State's strategy is 173 IN Ventilation System), are maintained. According to Clark, there is over nine million dollars worth of equipment with in the college. There are 75 acres of grass on the 180 acre Orem campus. It is mowed by Ray Jensen and Tim Bird, full-time employees working eight hours a day just mowing the grass. Two part-timers work eight hours a day trimming and grooming. Clark says that the men on the maintenance crew arejack-of-all trades. "They may be electricians by trade, for instance," he says, "But they are also plumbers and carpenters." Most of them are asked to do a variety of jobs." The custodial department is also to be complimented. The hard work and care they put into their jobs is evidenced by the growing number of community activities which are held at the college. Under the auspices of Tom Hover, director of Auxiliary Services and Student Programs, and Robert A. Cheatham, custodial supervisor, the Student Center is the hubbub of student life. to strike first. He also attributed Gorbachev's overtures to work out the disarmament to the fact that the race is "killing" the Soviet Union financially. During the lecture, Dougherty agreed with Gorbachev's proposal of dismantling the last nuclear weapons on earth by 1990, with the idea of deterrence, saying there aren't many options. Speaking from a Christian point-of-view, Dougherty said that Jesus grew up in a violent world and he confronted evil. He said, "The only way to live with integrity in a world full of violence is to be like God." He said that the image of Jesus with a submachine gun in his hand doesn't come off very well. "God's will is that we be happy as a whole. There is no we, they with God," Dougherty said. Also during the lecture, Dougherty noted that an actual atomic war would not only cause the destruction of the environment and plunge the earth into a nuclear winter; but that it would also destroy planet Earth. Dougherty said that in the last two years he's seen a whole new momentum and that United States citizens are demanding disarmament. He said, "A significant minority can make the difference.
