Studen t Council Finalizes Homecoming Plans with Concerts, Movie, Dance, Pizza By D. Michael Norton Homecoming will make its 2nd annual appearance this week Monday the 14th through the 18th. The festivities will be kicked off with Club's Day. According to A.S.U.T.C. Cultural Vice President Brooke Hickman, all organized clubs will exhibit displays. At noon in the Student Center the Wolverine Basketball team will be introduced along with the Queen candidates. Students will be treated to a battle on Tuesday the 15th as the Student Council square off against the Volume 8 No. 14 Newsline Pressure Mounts over Afghan invasion The United States is taking punitive measures against the Soviet Union in response to their military moves in Afghan. One of these measures was a grain embargo. Carter estimates there are approximately 50,000 to 100,000 troups from Russia in Afghanistan. Carter said the Russians would only be allowed to receive eight of the 25 million metric tons of grain previously promised the Russians for the year ending Sept. 30. Trading stopped in commodities market In an unprecedented move, the Carter Administration has stopped trading in the commodities marked, to assess what the grain embargo against Russia will have on the price of grain in America. Farmers are not buying or selling individually for the most part, until disposal of the grain is made certain. Some reports state some of the grain may be used for gasohol. Bert Parks released as Mr. America Bert Park was dropped as master of ceremonies of the Miss America Pageant. The move was to give the show a new look for the 1980's. Bert Parks said he was shocked and had not been told the news until he was contacted by the New York Post AddDrop Students will now be charged $1 to add and drop classes. Schedules may be changed until the last two weeks of the quarter. A course card or signature of the instructor is required to add a class. A teachers signature is not Circle K Sponsors Forum Speaker Gifford Nielson Quarterback Gifford Nielson of the Houston Oilers will conduct a forum assembly Monday Jan. 14 in the Student Center Cafeteria, UTC students, faculty and staff will be addressed by Mr. Nielson and his father, Stan Nielson at 12:45. "Rock Candy' for Homcoming Dance Playing for the Homecoming Dance on Friday January 18th, will be a group known as "Rock Candy". The dance will be held in the OFFICIAL NEWSPAPER OF UTAH TECHNICAL COLLEGE Now $1 required to drop. Departments which were full as of January 10 are: Electronics, Electronic Technology, Heavy Equipment Operator, Graphics Commercial Art Technology, Nursing, Dental Assisting, Diesel, and Professional Driving. A banquet for all Circle K members will preceed the address at noon. The forum is to be sponsored by the Circle K Club and the Orem City Kiwanis. The bands will perform from 9-12 a.m. There will be a $2 admission charge. Special Events Vice President Tori Peck, director of the weeks's activities, stated "I guarantee that all students who come to the Homecoming activities will have a good time, and I'm expecting a good turnout." Pizza and romance are on tap Thursday the 17th as Bookstore Remodeling of the Bookstore has created more shelf space and better display areas. New cashiering stations have eased line to reduce registration rush. Photo bv Scott Hancock Bookstore Manager Brian Harwood assists student guitarist and lead vocalist said they perform songs by groups such as Heart, Cars, Donna Summer, U.F.O., and Van Halen, however, they don't like to be branded as having any Opens After Renovation one kind of style. They are calling their music, "high energy dance music." The group does its own .special effects with a fog machine and flash boxes the film "One on One" is shown at 8 p.m. in the Student Center. Again there will be a $2 admission charge. "This will be a great way to get the New Year rolling," mused Ms. Hickman as she spoke of Friday's activities. The day begins with a pillow concert at 11 a.m. in the Student Center with a special surprise artist. Snow College will be in the Timpview High School gym at 7:30 p.m. to try and spoil the Wolverine netter Homecoming. January' 11, 1980 With relocation and remodeling completed, the Orem campus Bookstore has reopened to serve UTC students. Final remodeling began at the end of fall quarter. Employees worked every day of the holidays excluding Christmas to prepare for registration crowds. "It's a lot easier for the students now," said Bookstore manager Brian Harwood "We've been able to organize better. There is so much more shelf space; everything is better displayed and more easily found. The new cashiering stations have made it easier and faster for students to get through the lines." "We haven't had the rush line up like we normally have," Harwood continued. "There's not much waiting this time." Shoplifting will be lessened with the addition of controlled exitentrance gates.One-way-glass will enable employees to view students at the rear of the store. A temporary bookstore has been opened on the Provo campus in the south end of the cafeteria. Results of a student council survey indicated the need for the temporary outlet, however "...most of our customers have been, for candy," said Harwood. "But we want to offer students this service, so we will continue to open the Provo bookstore the first week or two of every quarter." The Provo outlet carries supplies, tools, and required texts for the Electrical Automation, Electronics, and GraphicCommeracial Art departments. It will be open daily until Jan., 14th from 7:30 a.m. -1:30 p.m. and evenings from 5:30 - 8:30 M-Th.
