Plothow The Odyssey campaign swept the 1985 Utah Technical College at Provo political race, Friday, April 19. Presidentelect Bobby Thomas and Vice President-elect Karen Gilbert captured a total of 509 votes. Incumbent candidates Jay Deuel and running Vice President Tony Marren fell 108 marks short. A record 948 collective votes were tallied, marking the 1985 elections one of the most successful on record. The closest race came between the Special Events V.P.'s Katherine Bayles and Bryan Samuels. Samuels of the Odyssey party rallied with 84 votes ahead of Bayles 490 to 406. Culutral Vice President Sue Drage drew 125 more marks than opposing candidate Mary Mecham. Odyssey Social Vice President Lisa Hall nabbed the largest amount of ballots totaling 519 compared to Kathy Bergant's 380. . Kevin Stevenett, AcademicP.R. candidate, gathered 470 allies while Brian Wolsey held 368. The ASUTC constitutional changes drew the largest amount of favorable responses, passing with 612 yes's to 128 no's. One of the main emphasis of the change is making the AcademicP.R. Vice President a split job. The 1985-86 year will find the Academic and Public Relations Vice President held by two separate vice presidents. Elections Committee Chairman, Paul Wheeler, noticed that this year's elections were relatively clean. PBamiiniel mnraeirDceruDeriit; AcEBvSEBes for cadis Commencement exercises for graduate students are scheduled to be held May 30 at 6 p.m. The ceremony is only held once a year at the end of Spring Quarter and is to honor all graduates for the previous year. President J. Marvin Higbee will host a reception afterwards for graduates, parents, relatives, friends, and faculty. Participants need to make arrangements through the Bookstore for caps and gowns. A $9 rental fee will be charged when the order is placed. Measurements will also be taken at that time. Graduates who are unable to make arrangements in person, can place their orders by mail. For information regarding the rental of caps and gowns by mail order call (801) 226-5000 ext. 397. The deadline for placing orders and paying the $9 rental fee is April 19. Orders received after the deadline may result in a cap and gown not being available in the right size. These invitations can be picked up at the Information Desk in the Business Building. Students must provide identification when picking up their invitations. Additional invitations can be ordered for .20 cents apiece. Students should plan on a two week wait after placing their orders for invitations. Matching name cards can also be obtained by placing an order at the Information Desk located in the Business Building. For further information concerning printed invitations, other printed materials, or the Show Begins May 3rd photography, painting, graphics, fiber, glass, drawing, ceramics, illustration, jewelry, sculpture, and architectural rendering. Editorial Positions Open Interviews for editorial positions will be held on April 28th at noon in SC 203. Positions that are open are:Editor-in-Chief, Assistant Editor, Business Manager, Photography Editor. Student editors are given a full scholarship for three quarters and also a salary. Persons interested in interviewing for the positions should fill out a UTC employment application, and bring in a resume and portfolio to Elaine Englehardt in SC204 by April 23. Applicants should have a 3.0 g.p.a. and some experience in the field, whether it be writing, photography, or sales. Those accepted for show will judged. Cash prizes will be awarded to the Best of Show winner in each category as well as to the 1st, 2nd, and 3rd place winners. Ribbons will also be awarded to finishers lower than 3rd place. Political elections throughout the world are marred by disagreement and confusion. Utah Technical College was to be no exception during the 1985 election campaigns of Survivors II and Odyssey. UTC's primary elections elected to convene an Elections Committee meeting with all of the opposing parties Reagan Connection, Blitz, Survivors II, and Odyssey. Minor allegations were discussed and resolved. Man Of LaMancha Ticket on Sale Tickets for the musical production, Man of LaMancha, go on sale at Utah Technical College at ProvoOrem, Monday, April 15. Performances are scheduled for May 10, 11, 13 in the Ballroom on the Orem Campus. A dinner theatre performance has also been scheduled for May 9. Photo by John Pack. 9th Annual Women & Business The 9tli Annual Women and Business Conference wil be held at the Westin Hotel Utah on April 26 and 27 in Salt Lake City. The keynote speaker will be Dr. Orma Linford, a native Utahn and a noted public speaker on constitutional law, and Dr. Eunice Shatz who is Dean of the Graduate School Going into the finals, the majority of resistance occured following the publication of the Special Elections Supplement for the Tradewinds PRESS Wednesday, April 17. A written complaint was filed with Dr. Wayne Kearney, Vice President of Student Services, Tom Hover, Director of Auxiliary Services & Student Activities, Elaine Englehardt, adviser to the Tradewinds PRESS. Charges were filed by candidate Tony Marren concerning the editorial appearing in the special supplement of the Tradewinds PRESS, "Let the Record Speak." Marren explained, "I desire to present this as my petition to see that a meeting be convened to address the issue due to the obvious misinformation of statements made by the Press in the spirit of suppossedly expressing truths that in all reality are faith promoting rumors." A meeting was called Thursday, April 18. Dr. Kearney and Ann Richardson, Student Services, co-chaired the meeting. Marren referred to charges against Bobby Thomas and Kathleen Plothow, Editor for the Tradewinds PRESS. One of the major allegations were against Thomas and Plothow, charging of Social Work at the Univer sity of Utah and who received the 1984 Susa Young Gates award for outstanding service to women in Utah and for dedication to the cause of Human Rights, workshop sessions will include Career Dynamics, Satellite sessions, and a session on Entrprcneuring. them with consipiracy against the incumbent Jay Deuel. Accusations led to Plothow and Thomas combining efforts in writing the editorial against Deuel. Evidence from both Marren and Plothow were weighed and the charges were dismissed. The basis for further confrontation dealth with the allegation of the "obvious misinformation" in the "Let The Record Speak" PRESS editorial' Dr. Kearney observed that though he did not agree with the student newspaper taking a stand on the elections, he agreed it. was the paper's right. The continued discussion determined that editorials are subjective and are in fact an opinion. These allegations were also dropped. The editorial proved not to be libelous or slanderous. The final question was whether or not such speculation called for a re-vote, with the idea the Survivors II campaign had been hurt by the PRESS editorial. Elections committee chairman, Paul Wheeler, did not see a reason to take a finals election re-vote. Following the meeting formal charges were filed against Marren and the Survivors II party by candidate Bobby Thomas, but all charges about both parties were finally dropped. - Conference Set The deadline for Summer quarter graduation is Friday, April 26, at 5:00 p.m. Applications for graduation may be obtained at the Academic Advisement Center on the Orem campus and at the Records window on the Provo campus.
