Plothow The annual Athletics Awards Banquet, honoring students, athletes, parents, and coaches," was held Wednesday evening, May 22, 1985 in the Orem Student Center Ballroom. Athletic Director Mike Jacobsen, began the ceremony with humorous tributes to UTC coaches. Utah Technical College ' at Pro-voOrem has one of it's most successful athletic years, the 1984-85 seasons, to date. UTech women's volleyball coach, Lori Richards, honored the 9 freshmen and 3 sophomores for setting precedence by going to national competition. "Never before has a team played with so much heart and believed in their goals and w'ere willing to work for them." Richards spoke of her team. The Lady Wolverines placed seventh in national competition. Diane Campbell and Shauna Clark made All-Conference teams and All-Region 1st team honors. Photo by John Pack Utah Technical College at ProvoOrem will present one honorary degree and honor five valedictorians at the Thursday, May 30, commencement ceremony, which . will begin at 6 p.m. in the Orem campus Activity Center. Utah House of Representatives member James R. Moss will receive an honorary Associate of Science degree from President J. Marvin Higbee for his special efforts on behalf of the College. Mosss has been a member of the House since 1983, serving on numerous committees. Students to be honored as valedictorians for the College include Frederick Brown Sr., School of General Education; Denise Dixon Kelly, School of Business; Paul Mansfield, School of Technology; John Douglas McMullin. 1 1. i Representative Jim Moss will be presented an honorary degree from President Higbee, for his service ., (err Named New Commissioner The Utah State Board of Regents picked W. Rolfe Kerr to fill the position as the state's fourth commissioner of higher education last Friday, May 18. Kerr, 49, executive vice president of Brigham Young University, will sit in the $82,400-a-year job beginning June 1. Utah State Board Regent Chairman, Kem Gardner, explained that Kerr was finally picked after a nationwide search. Kerr never applied for the position, but was nominated by an unknown in- The new commissioner was an assistant dean of students, associate dean of students and assistant to the president at the University of Utah. He was also assistant managing director of the LDS Student Association in Salt Lake City, dean of men at Weber State College and coordinator of student government at USU. Offers $100 Dr. Rolf Kerr was chosen as the new commissioner of. Higher Education. The Associated Students of Utah Technical College at ProvoOrem are giving a $100 cash prize to the winning individual, group or family participating in the Lagoon Day Talent Show to be held May 25 at Lagoon. The UTC Lagoon Day activities will include a Pavillion Party at noon. The Pavillion Party will have entertainment, games and prizes. UTC's own John Pack, a comedian and singing personality, will emcee the noon event.
