JjM- J. Vol. 6 No. 30 Women's Lays Groundwork Utah Technical College at Provo and Orem has completed its hrst season of women's soft-ball, playing on a non-league basis, and next year will officially join the Women's Intermoun-tain Collegiate Athletic Conference, according to Sharon Benson, director of women's athletics at Utah Tech. The UTC women's Softball nine played 16 games and won seven in its first season, with high hopes of bettering its record next year in league play. Among teams played this year were College of Eastern Utah, Dixie, Snow, BYU junior varsity and Idaho State University at Pocatello. "We laid the groundwork this year," said the petite coach who graduated from BYU in 1976 as valedictorian of the college of physical education. "Next year in league play we hope to be competitive." Utah Tech entered women's athletics this year after receiving formal permission for such a program from the Utah State Legislature and the Utah State Board for Vocational Education. The college will compete beginning next fall as a member of the WICAC in both softball and volleyball, and on a non-league basis in other women's sports. Utah Tech's formal petition for acceptance into the Women's Intermountain Collegiate Athletic Conference was accepted by that body about a month ago. The WICAC includes, besides Utah Tech, eight other junior colleges plus junior varsities of four-year colleges or universities. They are Snow, Dixie, College of Eastern Utah, Southern Utah State College, Ricks - College and junior varsities at BYU, Utah State Softbal Northwestern Community College at Rangely, Colorado. During the season just ended, Utah Tech played fast-pitch softball under American Softball Association rules, which are followed by the WICAC. Closing out the first year of women's athletics at Utah Tech, Coach Benson outlined the goals of her program as follows: "The purpose of the Women's Athletic program this year was to lay the foundation for an intensified program and next year on a more highly competitive basis. "It was also a valuable tool in making the public, including local coaches, ' parents and athletes, aware of the newly established program. This year's efforts should help draw results for next year. "By extending its approval for such a program, I feel the State Board for Vocational Education has opened the gate for many girls who are highly skilled in athletics, and wish to pursue that interest but who are not drawn by the academic atmosphere of universities. Now a girl can pursue a highly useful technical or skilf-orianted vocation and still have an opportunity to excel in athletics o O V The first year of women's soft-ball at UTCP was successful.
