Volume 10 Number 33 UTAH TECHNICAL COLLEGE AT PROVOOREM - P.O. Box 1609, Provo, Utah 84603 May 23, 1983 Graduation Program Is Announced By Linda Jensen 1,000 students will graduate this year from Utah Technical College at ProvoOrem. This figure includes those who have completed their courses of study during Summer, Fall, Winter, and Spring quarters. According to Linda Walton, Public Relations Director at UTC, this figure is nearly double the 674 graduates of 1982. However, only about 350 graduates are expected to participate in commencement exercises. Commencement will take place outdoors, Thursday, June 2, 1983, at 6 p.m., on the Orem Campus. A processional will begin in the main hallway of the Trades Building at 5:30 p.m. The keynote speaker will be Vocational and Adult Education Assistant Secretary, Robert M. Worthington. Honorary degrees will be presented to former president of the college, Wilson Sorensen and posthumously, to former director of the college, H. E. Johnson. The Johnson family will also make a presentation to the college. President J. Marvin Higbee will president over commencement ceremonies, with Dr. Lucille Stoddard, Instructional Vice President, presenting candidates for graduation to the Board of Regents. Margaret Nelson, Alumni and Friends Vice President, will also make a presentation to faculty members. In case of inclement weather, services will be relocated to Mountain View High School. Caps and Gowns are still available for those students participating in commencement exercises who have not yet ordered them. "We ordered an extra 30 caps and gowns, so if any students still want to obtain them, they will be distributed on a first come first serve basis, "said Linda Walton. Women will wear blue, and the men will be dressed in gold. Announcements are also available for the graduates to pick up. "We ordered 10 announcements per graduate, for which there is no cost to the student," commented Ms. Walton. "However, there will be an additional charge if the graduates want to obtain more than their allotted 10 announcements." Robert Worthington will be the commencement speaker at UTC's Graduation ceremonies. lorensen To Receive Honorary Degree Utah Technical College at ProvoOrem will present two honorary degrees at the Registration For Continuing Students Utah Technical College at ProvoOrem will begin registration for continuing students Monday, May 23, with new student registration set for Monday, June 13. Classes will begin June 15. A special summer program in graphics including design, screen printing and lithographic stripping will be included in the offerings. Evening classes will include studies in Constitutional Law. Personal Injury and Litigation, Evidence and Adult Driver Education. Continuing student registration will continue through June 14 and classwork will end August 5, providing eight weeks of instruction. For more information, please contact the College at 226-5000. June 2 commencement ceremony to former President Wilson Sorensen and a posthumous degree to the first director of the College, Hyrum E. Johnson. Sorensen was president of Utah Technical College at ProvoOrem from 1949 to 1982 and has been involved with numerous educational and civic associations throughout the state. Johnson's degree, which will be accepted by his son. Vard H. Johnson, will be presented because of the pioneering efforts of Johnson during the early years of the College. Directly involved with the, then Central Utah Vocational School between 1938-1945, Johnson negotiated with instructors, legislators, local school districts and others for the establishment of the institution which later became Utah Technical College at ProvoOrem. The Johnson Family will present to the College a painting of Johnson, painted by Farrel Collett, which will be on display as the beginning of a historical collection at the College.
