Gardner Named New Coach Utah Tech Women's Basketball Team has received a new head mentor. Steve Gardner, former player at UTC has accepted this position. Steve is a native Utahn from Clearfield. His basketball background is almost inborn, coming from a rich family tradition of basketball players and coaches. Steve himself was an all-state performer in high school, before playing two years at the Tech. Steve's brothers, Kenny and Terry, both played ball at the University of Utah and Kenny went on to play pro ball in Europe as well as for the Utah Stars. With only seven weeks left in the season, Steve sees this job as a good challenge. "The girls really have a desire to win, but they've had an unfortunate situation with the recent changes in the coaching staff," commented Steve. "Hopefully, we can put everything together in the latter part of the season, and come away with a respectable year," added Steve. Steve's feelings on the team are that they all share the desire to work to win and improve themselves. The talent of the girls is real close, which will mean that all the girls will see alot of playing time. Steve is very enthusiastic about coaching the women and hopes that he can help them have a fun and successful year. Wolverines Sweep W. Proving the cheer true that, "you can't stop the Wolverines." Riding high on a exceptional defense they downed the Spartans 101-83. The game was completely and without question property of the Tech, due mainly to outstanding effort and defensive control that put Wyoming at a loss the entire evening. The Tech had an exceptional scoring spree, putting six players in double figures. Western Wyoming on the other hand had limited height to draw on, which gave them troubles, and missed connections on a high percentage of the shots they put up. This gave the Wolverines rebounding a chance to convert for a real edge. By the ten minute mark, the game was all but out of contention, with the Tech's lead at a two to one ratio of 30-15. Wyoming didn't get to a challenging distance the rest of the half, and it ended 55-34 in the Wolverines behalf. Wyoming's attack lacked everything the Wolverines seemed to possess, and there clearly was the difference in the contest. It was the work of Roger Haefele and Jerry Carroll who kept them in contention at all. Contributing 30 and 13 respectively for their team. The effort proved inconclusive for the Spartans and it fizzled in despair.
