m mum mm Vol. 7 o. 20 UTAH TECHNICAL COLLEGE AT PROVO Feb. 25, 1979 Mayors Given Honorary Scholarship by Tech Officers The Mayors of Provo and Orem recieved honorary scholarships to the evening school's class for Emergency Medical Technicians on the Orem Campus of Utah Technical College at Provo and Orem today. Orem Mayor James Mangum and Provo Mayor Jim Ferguson and their paramedic teams met the press near the school's Learning Resource Center for the ceremony. Educational Vice President Dee Martin Miss UTC Pageant Draws Near: 1 0 Girls Enter The first Miss UTC will be crowned tomorrow night (Tue. Feb. 27) in The first student Student Center the college has ever had. This beginnings of a tradition will take place in the Wilson W. Sorenson Student Center which was named after UTCP Pres. Wlson Sorenson. President Sorenson will also crown the winner of the pageant. The pageant was set into motion when Rita Thomas of the Fashion Merchandising Dept. at the college was asked to advise it. She conceded with the stipulation that she could use it for a major fashion merchadising Eris 1 . Sum tier Institutional Council Member Gives Insight Eris Y. Mrs. Sumner has recently been asked to serve as a member of UTCP's Institutional Council which is the policy making Board of the college. "We hope to serve the paramedic needs of our Utah Vallev Community as we send graduates of this EMT course into the Fire Departments of our host and neighboring communities." said Vice President Martin. The course will begin at UTC for anyone qualified to enroll. Mike Johnson, a student project. Pat Furnian was assigned the task becuase of her previous experience, outstanding leadership skills and ability to get things done in both community programs and classroom situations Furman formed a committee with Rita Thoma as advisor. Jon Howe of the College Information Center Public Relations and Richard Braun as student Vicechair-person.Others have also helped with the work which started as early as September of last year to prepare for the event. The pageant promises to be as professional as any other in the state even though this is the trial run at UTC. steno-pool classes at Orem High School full-time and meets with the UTC institutional Council once a month to discuss the colleges policy. Mrs. Sumner said she received a letter from the professional paramedic who works full time as the UTC Financial Aids Officer will teach the course. After the conference, paramedics displayed their equipment to those present. Mayor Ferguson suprised the gathering by showing his skill in taking the blood pressure of Mayor Mangum. The EMT Courses have been taught at UTC for two years. It is an 8 week course. Buss Whitakcr & Jon Howe '.vill act as the Emcees for the program which will start at 8 p.m.. Pat Furman would like to "give her deep appreciation to Jon Howe and Rita Thomas for the cn'-nrditional time and effort they have put into making sure this pag eant will be a success." Ten girls have sent applications in requesting to be contestants. The general public is invited to the affair. Admission is two dollars for adults. Children will be admitted at a discount. Don Zimmerman is doing the choreograph y for the production number. Governor of Utah which stated that she had been recommended to serve on the council. She also added that she has never found out who it was that recommended her. though she has her suspicions. The council has been set up in the last few years to review policy of the college, to discuss finances, employment and the activities of building and developemcnt. Sumner is a sport enthusiast. She enjoys skiing. golf and bowling. In additions to sports she and her husband operate an unusual farm in north Orem. On the (arm they raise Buffalo and fish along with a few other normal crops. She also serves as an officer on the Alpine Education Association. She was president of that Asso. last year. "I'm on the Institutional Council for the interest of the student and not for glory of position" slated Mrs. Sumner as she left the interview to help some of her typing students with u ith questions. Photo by Richard Braun Moutainland Offers Tutorial Vocational Ed Program to Student Have you wondered lately whether or not the students here are getting younger? Do the people you see in the halls make you feel old? Don't wonder any longer-put your fears aside. You have undoubtedly seen the students from the Mountainlands Tutorial and Vocational Education Program, a program here at the Tech that works with high school students. Groups from the high schools in Utah Vallev come nearly every Wednesday to see first hand what life is like al UTC. After a briefing by the counseling Class Changes THE REGISTRATION DEPARTMENT HAS ANNOUNCED THAT THE ABSOLUTE LAST DAY FOR ADDING OR DROPPING CLASSES WILL BE Thursday, MARCH ST. staff, and a tour of the Learning Resource Center on the Orem campus the students go to class. UIC student volunteers accompany each high school student through their regular class schedule from about I 1 :00 until 2:00. giving them an inside view of what happens in college. The high school students arc sent into areas that they have selected previously as their area of primary interest. The volunteer guides are treated to lunch as a way of saying I hanks.
