December 2. 1977 Vocational Board Approves Athletics for UK Women by Tim Kennedy At a recent Utah State Vocational Board of Education meeting in Salt Lake City, board members passed a proposal to include women in the intercollegiate sports program. Institute Holds Building Dedication By Jon Cameron "True religion is not only grace and works, but intelligence is also basic to our eternal progression and thus our salvation," said Jeffrey R. Holland, Commissioner of LDS Church Education, at the recent Institute dedication. He also noted that because of the church placing strong emphasis on education, it spends a lot of tithing money on facilities such as the new LDS institute of religion at the Orem campus of UTC. During the dedicatory proceedings several prominant speakers voiced their feelings about the new facility. Among them were President Wilson Sorenson, UTC president; Frank Craven, Division Coordinator; Frank Bradshaw, Church Education system zone administrator; Kory Sorenson, Student Association President; and George Durrant, Regional Representative. The meeting was conducted by President S. Blaine Willes, Orem Utah West Stake. Following the opening hymn and the prayer given by James F. The musical numbers were performed by the institute choir under the direction of Wayne Boothe, an instructor at the institute. There were approximately 185 people in attendance. Among them were rep-sentatives of around 50 stake presidencies and the church education system. President Sorenson spoke on the progress of the institute from the days when it was first started until now. He jested that the language heard in the diesel mechanics shop has improved since the institute program was first introduced. He emphasized the need of educating the attitude as well as the hands in developing the students to their greatest potential. After the remarks, Mr. Holland gave the dedicatory prayer on the building and grounds. After the prayer those in attendance were left to inspect the new facility with Grant Anderson playing postlude music. UTC-P was represented by Blake Buhler, Randy Kester, Laurie Hart, Ron Meryhew, Dennis Cowden, Elissa Poulsen, and Barbara Pryor. The Utah Intercollegiate Assembly (UIA) is a representative assemblage of post-secondary institutions in Utah. It's purpose, as outlined by law is "to provide a means for student input to the Utah Legislature and to provide an academic experience in the Jeffrey Holland, commissioner of the LDS Church Educational system, delivered the dedicatory prayer and address at the new LDS legislative process, with full support and cooperation of the legislature." Member Insitutions are BYU, U of U, USU, Weber State, SUSC, Westminster College, Snow College, Dixie College, College of Eastern Utah, UTC-P, UTC-SL, and the LDS Business College. The annual convention is held in the capitol in Salt Lake City. Member Institutions have two members in the Senate and are allowed one representative in the House for each 1500 enrolled students, with a minimum of 2 representatives. The participants in the UIA 1 v. draft and pass resolutions to submit to the Utah Legislature in the form of bills. This year 106 resolutions were drawn up, ranging from Governance of Higher Education Institutions to gay rights. Thirty-four resolutions passed both the House and Senate in the three days of the assembly. The officers over this year's assembly were: UIA Governor, Jill Terre of U.S.U.; Secretary of State, Mark Packer, of BYU, Attorney General, L. Ross Martin of Westminster College; President of the Senate, Rob Alexander of Weber State; and it Orem Institute of Religion building. Approximately 168 people attended the dedicatory service. Laurie Hart, Ron Meryhew, and Dennis Cowden served in the House of Representatives; Blake Buhler and Randy Kester served in the Senate; Elissa Poulsen and Barbara Pryor served as staff members. Two of the resolutions sponsored by UTC-P were Governance of Higher Education Institutions and General Education Policy. Visiting speakers before joint sessions of the UIA were Governor Scott Matheson; Moroni Jensen, President of the Senate; Secretary of State Dave Monson, Dr. T.H. Bell of the State Board of Regents, and Senator Orrin Hatch. Highlighting the speakers was Governor Matheson who said, "prepared and proper input to legislators can achieve the end goals desired by the UIA." Dr. Bell also spoke excellently both pro and con on tuition increases. Randy Kester, ASUTC-P Student Awareness and Academics Vice President, was elected Secretary of State lit. gov. for the coming year. Dan Adamson of BYU, is the new Governor, Richard Wheeler of Snow College is Attorney General, Craig Carlile of USU is Speaker of the House, and Curtis Jacobs is President of the Senate. The UIA is also an active lobbying force in the Utah Legislature representing the 80,000 post secondary students in Utah.
