Volume 13 Number 22 OBiros M John Pack, Branden Miller, Kathleeen Plothow and D. J. Zale aid in The Tradewinds PRESS, the official student newspaper of Utah Technical College at ProvoOrem, captured a record 14 awards last weekend, March 15 and 16 at the annual Rocky Mountain Collegiate Press Association convention held in Denver, Colorado. UTech grabbed two first place awards, Investigative Reporting by D. J. Zale and Advertising Campaign represented by Branden Miller. The UTC staff claimed nine second place positions and three third place honors. Competing against 38 different college's, the UTC newspaper competed in division 2A. The 2A division contained numerous two-year colleges. By Loretta Bird and Julian Ervious The Lady Wolvs showed their dominence in the conference by' finishing in first place position in the conference with a 9-1 record. Their only loss was to the Ricks College Vikings. By taking the confernce championship, the UTEch Brigham Young University's Lamanite Generation will present a special performance at Utah Technical College's Orem campus Activity Center March 23 at 7:30 p.m. The 35-member student performing group, representing nearly 20 different Latin American, Polynesian and American Indian cultures, will present a showcase of the cultural heritage in a 90-minute musincal performance. More than 40,000 people throughout England, Belgium, Germany, Switzerland and Denmark experienced the Lamanite Generation's unique brand of entertainment during the summer of 1984. The group performed at the largest Fourth of July celebration outside the U.S. in Rebild, Denmark before a -crowd of 20,000. THE OFFICIAL Awards The Tradewinds PRESS Photo Editor John Pack walked away with three individual awards in the photography contest. Pack placed second in Special Effects and Special Supplement categories. Sports Photography was a third place winner. The RMCPA convention drew colleges from all western states from Oklahoma to California and Washington. Convention seminars and workshops included popular Denver journalist John Coit,' and Salt Lake City reporter Lynn Packer. Next years' RMCPA meetings will be held in Scott-sdale, Arizona. The student newspaper, the Tradewinds PRESS, acheived top honors in the following events: squad hosted the Regionals. After defeating Ricks in round one, the Lady Wolv's faced the North Idaho Cardinals who sported a 22-3 overall record. The game went down to the wire with the Lady Wolverines pulling off a 75-72 victory and clinching a berth in the national tournament. The Lady Hoopsters headed for production team of Ron Simpson and Randy Boothe, the group will tour the U.S. in 1985. The term "lamanite" refers to the ancient inhabitants of the Americas and Polynesia. In the role fo music director, Ron Simpson offers a variety of skills to the group. His career encompasses all areas of music production, recording, publishing and entertainment. Randy Boothe, the vocal coach for the group, has had extensive experience in music performance. In 1977, he directed the Disneyland All-American College Singers and Show Bank. Boothe, who has traveled with the group internationally for more than 14 years, believes music can promote brotherhood among all persons in the world. Members of the team are: Shauna Kay, Janene Hor-rocks, Sheri Davies, WEndy Smith, Rachelle Rogerson, Michelle Burnett, Cindy Sanders, Tammy Snow, San-die Gregory, Leicia Holdaway and Laura Thomas. "Our show presents a message of personal happiness," he said. "Friendship is our message, with music as the medium." Withdrawl Date Set Administrative withdrawal from classes: For those classes or laboratory classes that restrict enrollment because of available equipment, students MUST attend classes within the first three days of class. In order to secure your enrollment in these equipment-related courses, attendance within the first three (3) days of class is required. Students should be aware that such an administrative withdrawal could result in loss of financial aids, scholarship, tuition refund, and lab fees. PROVO-OREM Forensic Team Meads for Nationals Utah Technical College at t rovoOrem's Forensics Team qualified four students for the national tournaments, finishing sixth overall in competition against 11 schools from Utah, Idaho, Wyoming, Colorado and Arizona. At the St. George Regional Tournament Scott Finck of Vancover, Washington qualified in both Poetry Inter- pretafion and Dramatic Inter- pretation. Joe LeFevre finish-1 ed second in Dramatic Interpretation and Stephen B. Nix-k on of Provo qualified in Prose Interpretation and Duet Ac Make Next Year Yours By Russ Haupt "Make next year your year. Get involved in Student Government". This is the familiar sound around campus. The campaign for 1985-1986 is underway at Utah Tech. There are six elected officers at UTC. These include: President, Executive Vice-President, Public RelationsAcademic Vice-President, Social Vice- President , Cultural Vice President and Special Events Vice-President. For those interested in run-ning for an office, April 4, is .'Wirt ri t , J . .. - 4 ', ' "?r " Sadie Hawkins Dance Slated For March 29 A Sadie Hawkins Dance has been scheduled for March 29, complete with girl's preferece, maryin' Sam, photographs and competitions. The celebrations will begin at 8:30 in the institute gym. Couples are encouraged to dress in hillbilly attire. There Thursday, March 21, 1985 ting. Melody Dangerfield joined Nixon in Duet Acting and also qualified for nationals. The foursome will travel to Stockton, California in April to compete against other community and junior colleges throughout the nation. During the Regional meet it was announced that Utah Technical College at Pro-voOrem will host the 1986 tournament and also that Forensic Instructor Kim Brewster will serve as Regional Tournament Director. the due date for all applications. Ann Richardson urges all students to get involved and try competing for an office. Monday, April 8, 1985 will be the start of the overall campaigning. Then on Friday, April 12, 1985, the Primary Elections will be announced. From results of those votes taken the previous Wednesday. The week of April 15-19 will be the final push for candidates. The final vote will be taking place Wednesday night and Thursday day. Absentee Ballots are available in the Student Center. it 1 v will be prizes for best hick and best hickette. Maryin' Sam will preside over the dance until quittin' time at midnight. Cost is $2.00 with activity card and $3.00 without card. The dance is girl's choice or boy's initiative.
