And though summers typically sees lower enrollment numbers, the halls have been filling up with students, and the growth is expected to continue. Randyi NeiisenAJvu Review Meeting increasing enrollment demands By ELIZABETH STEELE News Writer Last fall's campaign to emphasize the benefits of taking a summer semester has been a success with summer enrollment up nearly 25 percent, but school officials aren't giving up the initiative just yet. Genera enrollment is on the rise and administrators are struggling to make space while students are scrambling to secure the classes they need. Encouraging students to take more summer courses remains the best solution to both problems. "We have the space available; we have adjunct faculty and regular faculty who are willing to take summer contracts. Increased summer enrollment is not as difficult for us as it is in the fall or spring," said Michelle Taylor, associate vice president for enrollment management. There are numerous benefits to taking classes during the summer. Pell Grants now cover tuition for summer semester. In-state tuition rates apply to everyone during the summer, saving international and out-of-state students thousands of dollars. Jake BuntjerUVU Review They Ve got skills By ANDREA LINDGREN News Editor At this year's SkillsUSA National Championship, students displayed their aptitude in a variety of skill sets and came out on top, winning ten medals, which included two gold medals, six silver and two bronze. The competition consisted of 96 possible categories with 5,600 students participating. It was a significant ac complishment that UVU was able to place in ten categories, though not unexpected."In the last ten years, we've been number one, two and three in the nation. We go there expecting to do well each year," said Darin Taylor, department chair of Engineering Graphics and Design Technology and director of SkillsUSA for UVU. Gold medal winners Nathan Jackson and Jared Hawkins, along with the other medalists, helped make it possible for UVU as an institution to rank number three in the nation. Por esta razon se ha creado el Centro de Servicio y Aprendizaje para darle a los estudiantes la experiencia que necesitan antes de graduarse. El centro trabaja con miles de estudiantes y organizaciones dentro de la universidad para tener un me-jor entendimiento de las responsabilidades de un proyecto grande. Todos aquellos estudiantes que quieran hacer una diferencia en sus vidas y en la vida de los residentes de la comunidad son invitados a participar. El centro tiene muchas formas en las que se puede participar, empezando por asignaciones para algunas actividades dentro de la universidad. La otra forma en que se puede ayudar es trabajando con profesores en diferentes proyectos, esto es parte de una clase y los estudiantes reciben credito en esa clase por ayudar en el proyecto asignado. Por ultimo, estudiantes puede participar como consejero del centro. El consejero planea, establece un presupuesto y lo lleva a cabo con la ayuda dc otros estudiantes y los directores . del centro. Esta ultima posicion tiene beneficios extras como becas o ayuda financiera para pagar la universidad. Shawn Leonard, facing life imprisonment By JULL4 POSEY Assistant News Editor The man accused of the brutal sexual assault of a 19-year-old woman along the Provo River Trail in early June was arrested and taken into official custody on July 14. Shawn Leonard, 33, has been charged with attempted aggravated murder, aggravated sexual assault and aggravated kidnapping, which are all first-degree felonies. Leonard's next court appearance will be July 21. He additionally faces first-degree felony charges of aggravated robbery, for the robbery of a clothing store in Mona the day of hisapprehension. Courtesy of Daily Herald Leonard is also looking at an added charge for escaping custody from a work-release program. On July 28, a separate hearing will determine whether or not Leonard violated his probation. Prosecutors say that they are seeking a life imprisonment sentence without parole."Anybody who commits that violent of a crime should be in prison for life," said Prosecutor Donna Kelly. The State of Utah is immediately proceeding with Leonard's escape of official custody charge in order to keep him behind bars and out of the community.
