Indian Week 1 starts April 2 and ends April 6. The idea to dedicate one week at UTC as "IndianWeek" was suggested shortly after the organization of the still new Intertribal Indian Club here at UTC. The Inter-tribal Indian Club was organized on Jan. 23, 1973. The Indian Students will have displays of Inidan art and culture to exhibit during the dedicatory week. They will have exhibition dances to demonstrate some of their tribal dances. All the novelties the Indian students sell will be genuine Indian crafts. It is possible for the Indian students to be recognized and have their own club in the school because they have the ability to organize the club. They did recieve suggestions and directions from members of the faculty and administration, however. The Indian students deserve much praise and should be congratulated for their interest in getting the club going.' At the same time, says Mr. Jerry D. Davidson, Director of Indian Students, "We owe thanks to Vice President Dale Peterson, Dean Wayne Kearney, and Director of General Education Gant Cook for realizing the importance of having an Indian organization in this school." Tiradewiinidls TRADEWINDS Indian Club Organized The Indian Club was organized on January 23 of this year when members of the administration became concerned that the 50 Indian students at the school need something to give them the identity they deserve. Many Indians in previous years have wanted to be involved in something that would make them feel they were really a part of the school. Mr. Jerry D. Davidson, was appointed as Director of Indian Students at the beginning of this school year. At the present school year. At that time, he was directed by Vice President Dale Peterson to organize an Indian Club. This was the beginning of the club. It was not only the administration or faculty that had the desire to see an Indian Club get started. For a long time, the Indian students in previous years have had the desire to have a club or sonic; otiier organization that would give them a part in the school as the capable and able students they are. Extracurricular activities for Indian students has now increased since the club was started. In most other schools throughout Utah there are Indian organizations to provide a common bond among the Indian students. With some 50 students here at UTC it is very important that they have a part in the club opportunities within the school. This is a fine opportunity for the UTC has a new Tradewinds Editor, namely, Dede Wise. Dede will be replacing Breta Nibley, who is leaving UTC after this quarter. Dede is vice president of the Insititue, and is presently participating in the school play. She enjoys horseback riding, skiing, playing chess, cooking and church work. Dede is from Brewster, Washington and is one of four children. She originally came to Utah to attend BYU. After attending the Y for two years, she transferred to Utah Tech because of its good accounting program. Dede says she enjoys working with the students and the administration. She hopes that she can do as good a job in 3 Indian students to get involved in the school, such as the Inner-Club Council and other activities. As a newspaper staff, and thus part of the school, we at UTC are proud to have this new club join us as the part of the school they are. We look to see many admirable things come of the club with the opportunities that are theirs. the upcoming issues as Breta did in the past. When asked how it felt to be editor of our school newspaper Dede replied, "Being an editor is a challenging job, but the Dede Thursday, March 22, 1973. MANUELITO, famous Navajo War Chief during Navajo Wars of 1860's. Drawn by Herman Dixson best part about it is the feeling you have of a part of the school's unity and growth." Congratulations, Dede; best of luck in the challenging position. 1 1 Wise
