Volume 10 Number 30 OFFICIAL NEWSPAPER OF UTAH TECHNICAL COLLEGE AT PROVOOREM May 28, 1982 Graduation Exercises Set for June 3 Utah Technical College at ProvoOrem will stage its 34th annual commencement at 6 p.m. June 3 in an outdoor ceremony on the Orem campus, with Kem Crosby Gardner, chairman of the Utah State Board of Regents, as the graduation speaker. An anticipated 674 graduates will receive their two-year degrees or certificates of completion for programs completed in a shorter time. It will set an all-timer record in number of graduates for the college, slightly surpassing last year's total of 660. Officials said the 674 figure is the number expected to complete graduation requirements by June 3. The commencement exercises will be held in the quad near the northeast corner of the Orem campus. Wilson W. Sorensen, director or president of the school during its entire lifetime, will conduct his last commencement. He retires at the close of this school year. Dr. J. Marvin Higbee, former president of Snow College has been selected by the state board of regents to replace him. Dr. Higbee will make remarks at the June 3 commencement. In keeping with the nature of Utah Technical College at ProvoOrem, a good many of the anticipated 674 graduates will not be present to receive their diplomas in person. They will have completed requirements beforehand and be out on jobs in business and industry. Dr. Gardner, the commencement speaker, has a law degree from the University of Utah. He has served on the board of editors for the Utah Law Review and received the Stephen P. Traynor award for outstanding legal writing. His civic service in addition to chairman of the state board of regents include serving with the Salt Lake City Airport Authority, member of the Utah Air Travel Commission, Utah Symphony board of directors, Utah Opera Company board of trustees and chairman- of. the governor's mansion, committee. i 1 H; Kem Gardner Prominent in business and industry he is general partner in Boyer-Gardner, a major developer of office, hotel and commercial shopping center properties in Utah, Idaho, Nevada. New Mexico, and West Texas. He is a director of Union Bank Corporation. Student Seriously Injured FollowingGame By Rich MacKay Darin Steele, a student at Utah Technical college was injured May 25, during the annual Mud Bowl tournament at UTC. Steele, a pitcher for UTC championship baseball team was participating in the mud bowl tournament. After his team claimed victory, they took a customary dive into the mud. Kelly Stevens, who was a spectator at the Mud Bowl saw the accident and discribed how Steele was injured. "He was doing a victory dive with the rest of the team but picked a shallow spot to do it in." He was rushed to Utah Valley Hospital were it was diagnosed he had fractured his neck. He is now in serious condition in the intensive care unit. Tradewinds For Summer For the first time ever UTC's "Tradewinds" publication will be run during the upcoming Summer Quarter. The newspaper will be published every two weeks instead of the usual once a week format.
