As the teams greeted their supporters, family members, and each other; their faces were filled with pride. The feelings of excitement only intensified when James Toone, the elections committee chair entered the ballroom with the magic ' envelope that contained the election results. The room of anxious supporters waited on edge for the results of the student government elections for the 2002-2003 school year. Bob Rasmussen, an advisor for student government praised the students for coming out and participating and shared his excitement of having so many new students involved in the campaigns. Khay Douangdara, the current Student Body President asked the 2001-2002 executive student government officers to take a moment and share their advice with the new student body government. Khay also made a small farewell to his fellow UVSC students; he graciously thanked everyone for letting him serve as Student Body President. He reminded everyone that as student body officials they were elected to serve the students, and that their first priority is always to the students. Why did you do all this studying? To get a diploma! You may miss the new cafeteria, hall of flags, and dances but it is all worth it. If you are graduating this semester, listen up! Graduation will be held Friday, April 26, 2002 in the McKay Events Center. So what do you need to do to get rolling? This is a good question for Mignon Nicol, a transfer assistant for the graduation office. Mignon said "If you are graduating you should receive a letter in the mail explaining all you need to know". From cap and gowns to graduation announcements, this letter will explain it all. If for some reason you didn't get an information letter in the mail, you can pick one up in the graduation office. But, you don't get a letter until you send in your graduation application. If you didn't have enough on your mind already, now you have to buy a cap and gown? Actually, no. You don't even need to participate in the ceremony if you don't want to. Graduation Supervisor Ronnctt 1 Stutz said "All diplo- . mas are sent! through the mail." The ceremony is just a way to show off to your courtesy photo family and friends that you graduated. 2002 graduate Jared Garner said "I'm not going to walk. It won't give me a sense of accomplishment of anything, plus my parents won't be here." Even though Jared isn't walking, a lot of students will be, such as Billy McGuire. Bill said "I'm excited to walk and show off to everyone that I made it!" Students should take the opportunity to walk. It's a long held tradition that shows achievement and inspires those of us who haven't graduated yet to keep working. Student Corey Johnson had the question "Do I have to pay any money to apply for graduation?" Ronnett Stutz said "There is a $20 fee to apply. The price can go up to $60 if the deadline isn't met." By Larry Margasak Associated Press Writer (ALEXANDRIA, Va. (AP) American John Walker Lindh wanted to leave his fellow Taliban fighters after learning of the Sept. 11 attacks, but did not go for fear he would be killed, his lawyers say. Lindh told U.S. military interrogators about his disillusionment, and summaries of his December statements mention those fears, the lawyers said in a federal court motion filed Friday. The defense is seeking complete notes of the interrogation.Lindh is being held in jail in northern Virginia, charged with conspiracy to murder U.S. nationals, supporting terrorist organizations and using weapons during crimes of violence.Three of the 10 counts carry maximum life terms and the others have a maximum of 90 years in prison. Lindh, brought back to the United States by military aircraft Jan. 23, has pleaded innocent. The motion maintained that when new summaries of the same military interviews were made in January, they omitted those statements. His lawyers said the statements could have been viewed as favorable to Lindh. By January, it said, "Mr. Lindh's case was the subject of frequent negative public commentary by government officials, intense media coverage and almost daily public opinion polls." Only incomplete summaries were provided the defense. "The December summaries ... report that Mr. Lindh was obviously disillusioned when he learned of the attacks on the World Trade Center and wanted to leave his Taliban unit but could not do so for fear of death," the motion said. The indictment had alleged that Lindh stayed in an al-Qaida training camp in Afghanistan after he was told that Osama bin Laden sent some 50 people to carry out 20 suicide terrorism operations against the United States and Israel. The motion filed Friday said any such information provided by Lindh "was conjecture and assumption based on what he had heard from others." The defense also sought access to an unidentified CIA official who was with slain CIA officer Johnny Micheal Spann when Spann was killed during a prison uprising in Undh" continued on page 4 r- ,1
