The deadly calamity was witnessed on televisions across the world as another plane slammed into the Pentagon, and a fourth crashed outside Pittsburgh. "Today, our nation saw evil," President Bush said in an address to the nation Tuesday night. He said thousands of lives were "suddenly ended by evil, despicable acts of terror."Said Adm. Robert J. Natter, commander of the U.S. Atlantic Fleet: "We have been attacked like we haven't since Pearl Harbor." Trade Center Attacks Establishing the U.S. death toll could take weeks. The four airliners alone had 266 people aboard and there were no known survivors. In addition, a firefighters union official said he feared an estimated 200 firefighters had died in rescue efforts. Dozens of police officers were believed missing. No one took responsibility for the attacks that rocked the seats of finance and government, but federal authorities identified Osama bin Laden who has been given asylum by Afghanistan's Taliban rulers as the prime suspect. Aided by an intercept of communications between his supporters and harrowing cell phone calls from at least ane flight attendant and two passengers aboard the jetlin-:rs before they crashed, U.S. officials began assembling a case linking bin Laden to the devastation. U.S. intelligence intercepted communications between bin Laden supporters discussing the attacks on the World Trade Center and. Pentagon, according to Utah Sen. Orrin Hatch, the top Republican on the Senate Judiciary Committee. The people aboard planes who managed to make cell phone calls each described similar circumstances: They indicated the hijackers were armed with knives, in some cases stabbing flight attendants. They then took control of the planes. At the World Trade Center, the dead and the doomed plummeted from the skyscrapers, among them a man and woman holding hands. "Freedom itself was attacked this morning and I assure you freedom will be defended," said Bush, who was in Florida at the time of the catastrophe. il J 0 t I! 004 4 PHOTO COURIESr OF THE LA. An hour later, due to fire and heat, the towers crumbled to the ground. taydeirofcs ireaciiioini to the afcfcad By Eseta Havea OF THE NETXNEWS When students asked about what their first reactions and impressions to the 'Attack on America,' most UVSC students were either shocked, scared, and didn't believe this was happening. Here are some of their opinions, thoughts, feelings, and ideas on this tragic event. Sophomore, Kyle Miller told The College Times, "Especially with the defense system in the U.S., it's a wonder that something like this slipped by." Venezuelan student, Carlos Gutierrez said, "Even though I'm not American, I feel for these people, feel angry towards the terrorists and sad for the victims' families. Also I think that especially with the United States' strict laws and great amount of budget for security, it wasn't enough, and obviously, something was missing there." Several students shared their guesses on who the terrorists are. Ryan "Bubba" Tracy exclaimed, "I served an LDS mission in Europe and was amongst a lot of Middle East people and other minorities. I noticed that they have little respect for life, including their own. So from my experience, it wouldn't surprise me if the terrorists are from the Middle East." On the other hand, some think anyone is possibly the suspect. "Whoever did this is extremely smart, intelligent, and knows their way around the U.S. so well. This person or group is somebody big, somebody up there, somebody who has a lot of say and power over a lot of things. They did not just come out of nowhere with this plan and get it done. These people had to have been powerful to carry this out. Maybe people within the own U.S. government, maybe people here negotiating with people from the Middle East." "But let us not jump into conclusions," junior Emily Davis said. Tyler Homes thinks it's someone in the U.S. that's connected to terrorists around the world. Michelle Cottam thinks the U.S. had nothing to do with this. "I don't think this required intelligence. All they did was bombed buildings. These Middle East people have been taught all their lives that America is Satan and needs to be destroyed." An anonymous source shared their feelings, "It's sad that people are capable of that much hate. These people don't have respect for our freedom or other people's lives. They hold their own convictions so strongly that they don't care about anybody else's." Concession worker Marjorie Hart commented, "I don't know why these people can't just leave us alone." Wes Banks mainly had something else to say about the terrorists, "These murderers had a point to prove. And it was selfish of them to kill others for what they believe in. But let me tell you, it was pretty cowardly of them to kill these people including themselves. Come on now, if you're going to make a bomb to kill people, then why should you die in it too? r That's pretty coward to me. They were too chicken." Lindsay Holding and Cheryl Butler think that this can be the beginning of some type of war, whether big or small.
