What is causing all the commotion on campus? It is time for the yearly Miss UVSC Scholarship Pageant. Seven of UVSC's finest will be competing Tuesday, January 15th for the coveted crown of Miss UVSC. The Miss UVSC pageant began in 1981 when UVSC was still Utah Technical College. Since that time it has evolved with the school. The pageant provides young women between the ages of 17-24 with the opportunity to compete for scholarships that will help them continue their education and also send the to the state competition to compete for the title of Miss Utah. The goal of the pageant is to recognize women at UVSC and support and encourage their role at UVSC and in the surrounding community. The pageant also puts at large amount of stress on promoting volunteer opportunities for all that wish to participate. There are four categories that each contestant must compete in to win the title of Miss UVSC which are talent, personal Interview, evening wear, and physical fitness in a swimsuit. During the talent portion of the competition, contestants must display a talent so that the judges may see their ability to perform and prepare. Judges will score each talent perfor mance on interpretive ability, technical skill and stage presence. The personal interview is also an important aspect of the pageant. This interview gives judges further insight into each contestant and their ability to express and distinguish their beliefs. Since Miss UVSC will be representing the school in many aspects it is important that they come across as articulate and confident. Since 1990 each contestant has been allowed to choose a personal platform, which they will promote as Miss UVSC. During this personal interview they may be asked to expound on that platform for the judges and the audience. Evening wear and physical fitness in a swimsuit, these two categories may seem superficial to many that oppose pageants, but according to rageant coordinators "first impression" in an important part of being Miss UVSC, and how each contestant carries themselves, as they will be representing the school. During these two portions of the pageant contestants are judges on good physical fitness and health, overall "first impression," sense of confidence, stage presence and personality. Contestants will also have to answer on stage questions during the evening wear portion of the competition. Nicole Shaw the reigning Miss UVSC will be giving up her title this Tuesday. During the past year Nicole promoted seat belt safety. Nicole is also responsible for choosing this year's pageant theme: "Fired up ft,. Mr -v.
