March 30th Deadline Caps and Gowns Available for Grads Volume 8 No. 20 OFFICIAL NEWSPAPER OF UTAH TECHNICAL COLLEGE AT PROVOOREM February 22, 1980 Newsline COURT UPHOLDS ABORTION RULES The Supreme Court has made a decision to allow the government to resume financing abortions for welfare persons pending a fullscale review of the practice. The Department of Health, Education and Welfare immediately issued orders that payments be resumed for eligible abortions. STORM DAMAGE-EXTENSIVE In California over 18 persons are dead, and thousands are homeless due to floods and dams overflowing from the recent rain storms. In Utah there is once again extensive damage in northern Cache County. Flooding continues in south western Utah also. HOSTAGES RELEASE HOPEFUL Iran's President Abolhassan Bani-Sadr said final terms of a UN agreement has been approved by Khomeni. Kurt Waldheim announced that a five-member commission would leave this weekend to begin investigating charges against the U.S. and the ousted Shah. SOVIETS SHUN DEADLINE The U.S. will not be attending the Summer Olympics in Moscow. The deadline of Feb. 20 came and went without any more on the part of the USSR to leave Afghanistan Valentines Dinner-Dance Draws Crowd of Nearly 200 By James Shaw Approximately 200 students were in attendance at the St. Valentines Day Dinner Dance which was held in the Student-Center Feb. 14. All students interviewed at the scene appeared to have a very good opinion of the event. Judy Curtis, a sophomore from Walnut Creek, California commented "This is very personable, everything is excellent," The cafeteria was decorated in the traditional red, white, and pink. Taxi, a seven piece band provided the music. Bobby Bird, drummer and vocalist said that Taxi has been around for close to five years, although he is the only original member. "We like to get out here and play in our tuxedos. We want to show people that we can play a variety of songs." The dance floor was surrounded by candle-lit tables where couples were served baked ham with spiced apple sauce, au gratin potatoes, and fruit salad. "It was grade A service." observed Jenifer Melon, a sophomore majoring in nursing. Students Now To Purchase Caps and Gowns March 30 is the final day to place orders for caps and gowns to be used in the 1980 graduation ceremonies. A new arrangement has been made which will enable both students and faculty members to purchase the caps and Faculty gowns. In the past they were rented and could not be purchased. They will be on display in the Orem campus Bookstore with the appropriate order forms. Orders must be made immediately to guarantee the purchase. The Tradewinds printed the Feb. 15th article on the student council meeting as saying the Student Council submitted the following recommendations for further use of the Provo Campus: 1. Developments of new vocationaltechnical programs. 2. Expansion of existing programs including evening school. 3. Leasing to private groups. 4. Allowance of other colleges to use the facility for local programs.These recommendations were made by a committee appointed by Pres. Sorenson and headed by LaVar Rockwood, . not. the Student Council. The Cultural Activities office at UTC is sponsoring a Car Care Clinic Feb. 25th thru Feb. 29th, from 12-1 daily in the Student Center Conference Room 101. Featured each day will be various . car maintenance tips with classes being taught by members of Josh Graces Auto Mechanics class. On Monday, Feb. 25th, Scott Pixler and Keith Reichler will give instructions on changing flat tires, and winterizing cars. Tuesdays lesson will focus on oil changes and minor tune-ups. This lesson will be taught by John Roberts and Philip Myer. Wednesday, Feb. 27th, Rick Whipple will give instruction on the proper use of battery cables. On Feb. 28th, Rod Cotner and Pat Cozian will go over problem solving noise detection and various symptoms. You will be able to understand what certain sounds your car maKes. The last lesson of the series will be held on Friday, Feb. 29th. Mark Bas-tian and Kevin Rowley will give tips on used car buying. Coming Up.'.-. Feb. 23 UTC vs Weber State J.V. Feb. 25 COW JAZZ. . .
