He was only one day away from his 52nd birthday when on Monday Oct. 27 he succumbed to the complications of liver cancer. Nelson has been a faculty member at UVSC since 1975, he was also hired as head baseball coach. He retired in 1998 from baseball coaching after which he remained on at UVSC to teach health and physical education. In 1998 he was the Physical Education Department chairman. Tom Perkins, Nelson's long time colleague in the RE. department said, "He's been an exemplary faculty member in the physical education department. Students have always loved to take his classes; he was always warm and genuine. He will be sorely missed by the department." Nelson was the department's teacher of the year for 1998 and that same year was inducted in to the Wolverine Hall of Fame. He was UVSC's winningest baseball coach. His clubs won 25 or more games in seven of his 15 seasons and took nine conference titles. Before 1998 Nelson had already survived three life threatening surgeries and two liver transplants. Nelson was an all-state baseball player at View-mont High School and was drafted by the 1969 World Champion New York Mets right after high school. He opted to play baseball for BYU instead of the Mets, and there he was a stand out pitcher earning WAC honors and winning the WAC earned-run-average title. He got his bachelors degree at BYU and went on to earn a Masters Degree from the University of Utah. Also noted for being an excellent basketball official, Nelson officiated games in the scenic West Athletic Conference, the Western Athletic Conference, the big Sky and the Mid-Continent Conference. Nelson and his wife have lived in Orem for the past 30 years where they raised their children. He also has four grandchildren. Schools have begun to provide this information over the Internet or in print. UVSC will provide the names over the Internet. "We have 24,000 students and a couple thousand employees. All kinds of people are here everyday," said Derek Hall, the UVSC Director of College Relations. "If this helps a student or a prospective student or an employee feel more comfortable, that's great. We have that responsibility." Sex offenders are required to register with the State and provide their current addresses under the Jacob Wet-tcrling Crimes Against Children and Sexually Violent Offender Registration Act. Jh VclWtMvs STAFF No, she isn't hiding, Martha blends right in. She has been studying with the UVSC student body in the library for the whole month of October. Martha is a life sized plastic skeleton that has been adorning the study tables in the library for Halloween. At the beginning of the month there were signs posted around the library that read, "Where's Martha?" and promised a piece of candy to students who could find her and tell the front desk her location. A huge witch's caldron was filled with treats for the lucky Martha finders. Laryn Albert who works in the library said, "She's out in the open, but she was more hidden at first." So many students found Martha on the first day that, Albert said, "we ran out of candy right away." "I went through about $14 or $15 worth of candy," said Claudine Boothe who's idea it was to play thefind-Martha game. Albert said, "Students would come up and say, 'what's that skeleton doing there?' and we would say, 'Oh, that's Martha!' and they would get a piece of candy." Other students would go on a Martha search to earn their sweets. "They would say, 'Who's Martha?' and I would tell them, 'go upstairs, you can't miss her and you will know her when you see her.'" While some students identified Martha correctly some did not know they were looking for a Halloween visitor and mistook another library employee for Martha. "We have a beautiful young Assistant director named Kim." Said Boothe, 'Skeleton" continued on pg. 3
