Enrollment dropped from 3,592 in fall 1998 to 3,092 in fall 2002. The goal of this research was to better understand student perceptions of UVSC and to provide useful recruitment information to future students. The ACT data file included a total of 6,718 high school graduates in 2001 that had UVSC included in their choice set for higher education. However, only 22 ultimately attended the college. There were about 1,738 high school graduates in 2001, who listed UVSC as a top choice and failed to attend any college the next academic year. One popular reason UVSC is so attractive to recent high school graduates is because it is often a less expensive option than other schools, while still offering a wide variety of majors and programs. UVSC also appeals to 'a large proportion of students who plan to work through college. The college offers night, weekend and internet courses, which allows more flexibility for working students. One more reason students choose UVSC is because of the high school concurrent enrollment program. High school students feel encouraged to continue their education at UVSC, and transition in familiar surroundings. Kristin Leavitt, UVSC student who participated in the concurrent enrollment program said, "I was excited about college after high school graduation. Gettling, a health educator, gave an hour-long speech giving statistics, quotes, and true life stories on what happens when people use tobacco. Gettling feels it is crucial to let people know of the harm of tobacco especially since the average age in Utah for a person to start smoking is 12. Philip Morris dominates the market controlling 50 percent of all tobacco sales in the United States. Something else people may not know is that Philip Morris doesn't just make tobacco products. They also own Nabisco, Jell-O, and Kraft. So, from graham crackers to chips ahoy, from cheese nips to cream savers, Philip Morris makes money on it all.
