Year's 67 homicides included 14 killed by their domestic partners SALT LAKE CITY (AP) - Among the 67 homicides in Utah in 2001 were 13 women and one man killed by their domestic partner or ex-partner. In three of the cases, a second person also was killed. One was a victim's new boyfriend, another was the mother of a victim and the third was a bystander who was shot when the victim ran into a restaurant, fleeing her husband. In addition to the 17 deaths connected to domestic violence, seven children were killed in 2001. Two of the children were shot by their father, who then took his own life. One of Hogle Zoo's giraffes dies after getting head stuck in fence SALT LAKE CITY (AP) - A giraffe died Wednesday after getting his head caught in a zoo fence, Hogle Zoo officials said. The male Baringo giraffe was found early Wednesday in the zoo's giraffe building. Veterinarian Nancy Carpenter said it appears that the animal died suddenly from severe spinal trauma. An examination will determine the exact cause of death. The 7-year-old, 18-foot-tall giraffe was born at Oklahoma City Zoological Park in 1994. He arrived at Salt Lake City's Hogle Zoo in 1995. The giraffe building, which offers visitors an eye-to-eye view of the animals, meets animal safety requirements outlined by the U.S. Department of Agriculture and the American Association of Zoos and Aquariums, zoo officials said. The building was closed to the public Wednesday. Three people injured in school bus eras Received by Newsfinder from AP CHENANGO FORKS, N.Y. UV Athletic Department Success has come to Cathy Nixon in basketball due to the countless number ot hours of hard work she has put In as a player and as a coach. By Sieve Schaack OF THE NETXNEWS STAFF Cathy Nixon has a passion for the game of basketball. Since the start of grade school when she played on a traveling squad in Duncanville, Texas to now in her seventh year as head coach of the UVSC women's basketball team that passion and burning flame has never flickered. And it never will. "I can't ever remember not just loving basketball," said Nixon. "I was really fortunate where I grew up in Duncanville, Texas because girls basketball is it. The town lived for it." So does Cathy Nixon. In first grade she started playing on a traveling team and from then on she never missed an opportunity to practice and get better. "I practiced all the time," said Nixon. "My mom teased me about one day it was raining and I was supposed to be studying for a spelling test. I was outside with my spelling book practicing because I didn't want to miss out on an opportunity not to practice. I wore out two to three basketballs a year." As Nixon progressed in the game she loves, she also found herself one of the tallest girls on her teams growing up. In the second grade she was on a mix team from different towns and one of the mothers on the team could be heard saying, "Get the ball to the long girl." Her Junior High coach Mrs. Morgan, measured the current Wolverine coach everyday against a filing cabinet and called her 'stretch' hoping she would grow. If Nixon then did make any progress her coach would be on the phone to the high school coaches. It was in Junior High Nixon realized she might have a future in the game of basketball. "A really fortunate thing happened to me when I was in the eighth grade," said Nixon. "I had the realization that I might have a future in basketball and I felt that responsibility. My dad has a saying he got from Linus in Peanuts it says; 'There is no heavier burden then a great potential.' "I never wanted to miss out on opportunities to get better. Any working moment I had where I wasn't supposed to be doing something different I wanted to practice." And practice she did. "My goal every summer was to develop at least one new move I could do," said the Wolverine coach. As the new moves continued "Nixon" continued on pg. 4 money lor Olympic siiutllss By Associated Press OF THE NETXNEWS STAFF MIDWAY, Utah (AP) - Heber Valley businesses wanting to get a private shuttle-bus system to carry Winter Olympics visitors to their stores have obtained a $15,000 pledge from Wasatch County. While the promised money would appear to assure the project, the sponsors fear state rules on bidding could delay the project beyond the Feb. 8 start of the games. "Time is of the essence. If we are not able to complete it because of a procedural thing, that would be a pity," said Wynne Creekmore, a Wasatch County businessman who is spearheading the proposal. Creekmore said he has asked the county attorney's office for an opinion on whether the shuttle project is subject to state bidding rules. Creekmore and his property-management partner Carolyn Hogwood have formed a limited liability corporation to operate the shuttle system. Since Wasatch County lacks public transportation and has only limited taxi service, Creekmore, Hogwood and other business owners believe a shuttle system is needed to serve visitors who have to go to town from housing and lodging units that are two to three miles away. Creekmore said the shuttle system would ensure that Olympics visitors see the Heber Valley as "a pleasant place to come visit and spend money." The shuttle system would run six hours a day every day. It would be free and make about a dozen stops. An estimated 20,000 extra people per day are expected to be in Heber Valley during the Olympics for the Nordic skiing events at Soldier Hollow. About 3,500 of them will stay overnight. The Salt Lake Organizing Committee plans a shuttle to Soldier Hollow from apark-and-ride lot southwest of I leber.
