To comment on the article email: netxnewsnetxxnews.net New philosophy major v Ihkmlal.lllm UVSC is a liberal arts college moving towards university status. It has a number of bachelor degrees, and a Philosophy major has just been added this school year. Michael Minch, the philosophy department advisor, feels philosophy is important so students are able to pursue core essential issues. What does it mean to know? What kinds of values dictate our lives? What is a human being? According to Michael Minch, these are all fundamental questions that influence what we do in life. What it means to be educated is the foundation of philosophy. Students need to have the opportunity to explore, to investigate these questions beyond a couple of classes. Philosophy majors, on average score higher on the LSAT than students in other majors. Students should take this into consideration if planning to go to graduate school. Also, philosophy students who go into science or business endeavors are highly valued by their employers. Employers see philosophy majors as interested in learning, as students who use logic, and as people have problem solving skills. If a student is unsure whether to major in philosophy, Minch recommends reading "The Examined Life" by Robert Moxick, to aid in the decision. The book covers issues such as dying, the nature of God, emotions, the holocaust and many others. Minch also recommends talking to him personally about a decision to major in philosophy as he can provide additional information about the requirements for the major and answer any questions students have. Minch said, "Majoring in philosophy equips one to live a fulfilling life. In a way qualitatively different than any other major."
