With the hoopla surrounding Julia Roberts winning the Academy Award for " Best Actress dwindling in the waysides, j UVSC honored its own at the Wolverine i Complete with a star-studded host, Nathan Osmond, flashing his ever famous Osmond ear-to-ear grin and vivacious charisma, the Ragan Theater housed a multitude of achievement and talent. "I couldn't believe how much these people have given to the school," Susan Knight, a sophomore, said. "I am amazed that I know so many great people." Collectively, 44 studentsfaculty and nine departments were nominated by the student body for the following award categories: Distinguished Volunteer Service, Organization of the Year, Educator of the Year, Commitment to Excellence Department of the Year, Athlete of the Year, Wolverine Spirit, Achievement of the Year, Advisor of the Year, Talent of the Year, Woman of the Year, and Man of the Year. Reportedly, the judging process for each of the finalists was a rigorous one that underwent many hours of serious deliberation."A I can say is I'm glad I wasn't on the selection committee," Knight said. "There was too many great things done by, too many great people. I'm just so impressed by them all." It may have been the single most unifying event of the year on UVSC campus. Under one roof individuals were exactly that... individuals. Everyone came together as equals; faculty and students alike, together honoring each other for effort and dedication to the school, extenuating mutual respect and admiration. Throughout the night, finalists for Talent of the Year gave the audience a taste of exactly why they were nominated. Anna-Marie Johnson showcased costumes she hand-sewed and designed for the recent production of The Rover by the Theatre Arts Department. Mary Young rugged at heart string as she belt out "On My Own" from Les Miserables. Taylor SinqueGeld charmed all through his performance of "In The Wilderness" from Eden. And Isaac Halasima featured an thrilling video production of the Volleyball and Basketball team. ..revealing to all why he is often referred to as the "camera genius" by his co-workers and close social circle. "The more I see things like this (the to UVSC," Justin Harrison, a freshman, said. "The cream of the crop and the best of the best are all found here on campus. I'm so proud to be a Wolverine." Harrison said that "everyone at the assembly deserved a Wolverine Spirit award" for coming out and supporting the "campus community." "There was a lot for love in that room. People were screaming at the top of their lungs, giving standing ovations, taking tons of pictures. It was so great to see all the support everyone gave each other...that's got to be the best recognition of the evening." Recently elected ASUVSC President Khay Douangdara for 2001-2002, agreed. "It was very exciting to be there," he said. "A lot of people have done so much for this school and it was great to see them recognized." As the reverberating antics candidly delivered by Donnie Osmond's nephew came to a close and signified the end of a high quality production, the seemingly everlasting hugs, the ecstatic squeals from mothers doting on their precious "pride and joy," and the seas of pearly whites stretching far beyond the gulf ball tears resounded one common theme: CONGRATULATIONS!Distinguished Volunteer Service: David Valderrama, "Brittany Wiscombe, UVSC Volunteer & Service Learning.
