The College Times MONDAY, NOVEMBER 19, 2007 THE INDEPENDENT STUDENT VOICE OF UTAH VALLEY STATE VOLUMEXXXVII.NO. 13 L7VCOLLEGETIMES.COM Special Report UVSC hockey coach killed Assistant UVSC hockey coach Kenneth Dolezsar fatally shot in Sandy on Nov. 15 W Ben Webster Sports editor ith a witness just feet away, Dolezsar, a Utah Valley assistant hockey coach, was fatally shot last week outside a restaurant in Sandy. Dolezsar helped the hockey team with more than just coaching during the three years the program has been in existence: He has been the primary financial support for the team since joining forces with head coach Matt Beaudry to start the program at Utah Valley, including a $50,000 donation in April 2007. "He meant everything," Beaudry said. "He was the one who called me and said he wanted to start a team at UVSC ... this was his passion." DJ Strader, who has been on the team all three years, said, "He was one of the founding building blocks and was an enormous part of what this team meant." The witness to the shooting said Dolezsar was arguing with another man near Dolezsar's SUV in the parking lot at the Village Inn restaurant at 150 W. 10600 South, near the South Towne shopping center before 7 a.m. last Thursday morning. Dolezsar, 50, held his hands up and backed away from the other man before the suspect shot him two or three times. The suspect reportedly drove away from the scene in Dolezsar's white Lincoln Navigator. The vehicle was found, but the suspect was not yet apprehended as of Friday, Nov. 1 6. Several of Dolezsar's relatives met at the restaurant after the' incident. Police had potential suspects and leads. The restaurant closed for the day, but no one was inside when the shooting occurred. "Ken was good to everyone. All the guys loved Ken, and he helped everyone no matter what," Beaudry said. Beaudry called the players for an emergency team meeting Thursday morning and told them Dolezsar was shot and killed. "We walked in and saw the coaches and trainers crying, and coach told us what happened," captain Eric Bowman said. "It was just silent for like 20 minutes."The Wolverines' games last weekend against the University of Utah and Walla Walla were played in Dolezsar's honor, as well as the rest of the season. The committee will un veil the official UVU logos to the public toward the latter half of homecoming week, Nov. 26-30. ' The unveiling ceremony will also act to kick off "UVUphoria," a yearlong series of events to celebrate the transition to UVU. At this ceremony, an entire logo "family", will be released.Designed by Rare Method, an interactive marketing firm based in Salt Lake City, the family will consist of about eight official logos, such as the university seal and monogram and the athletics logo. Rare Method showed a distinct interest in working for the university from the beginning and set itself apart to achieve this. Read more on A4 On campus Students help Iraqi children UVSC professor collects school kits for Iraqi children Britnee Nguyen News writer UVSC students have contributed school supplies to children in Iraq with the assistance of Diane Perkins.Perkins, a UVSC history professor, has had her students bring in items to be put together into school kits for Operation Iraqi Children (OIC). She has been assembling school kits for OIC for the past three years with her students. Perkins started getting involved in OIC as a high school teacher in California and has been doing it for three years. Since she was in California when the program began, she noticed how OIC helped people with opposing war views come together on a project. "California is a much more liberal state than Utah; so as far as the war was concerned, it was somewhat more controversial.
